Samuel “Sam” Meredith Strong III of Easton, Maryland, passed away on April 4 due to complications from dementia. He was 90 years old.

Sam was born March 2, 1935, in Bayside, New York, to Helen Pettit Strong and Samuel Meredith Strong, Jr. When he was eleven years old, his mother married Herbert (Lindy) Lindholm, who became his loving Dad …

Sam met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Cookie) Riggs, while he was still at Colgate. They were married in February, 1957 …

… In 1968, Sam left Reynolds to start his own real estate firm in Old Lyme and Essex, Connecticut. The Strong Agency specialized in high-end properties in the Lower Connecticut River Valley. Sam served as President of the local MLS board and was a trustee of the Lyme Art Academy. He also served as Greens Chairman on the board of Black Hall Club and as a board member of Old Lyme Country Club …

Sam is survived by his wife Cookie, his children, Elizabeth Strong Baker and her husband Larry, Sam IV, his grandchildren … and by six great-grandchildren …

OLD LYME— Susan Rivoire Hostnik, longtime resident of Old Lyme, passed away peacefully March 15, 2025. She was 91. Susan was born August 14, 1933, in New York City, N.Y., the daughter of the late Charles William Rivoire and Dorothy Starr … She is also survived by her five children … She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband of 61 years, Dr. William John Hostnik, formerly of Charleroi, Pa., predeceased her …

On Saturday, April 5, Old Lyme Girls Tennis crushed Portland 7-0. The team is coached by Joseph Trausch. Game scores were as follows:

Boys Lacrosse

On Saturday, April 5, Bacon Academy defeated Old Lyme 19-4.

Hatden Grethel, Judah Waldo, Alex Krol and Ben Goulding each scored for the Wildcats, one goal apiece.

Baseball

On Saturday, April 5, Lyme-Old Lyme fell 4:0 to Coginchaug.

Coginchaug opened the scoring in the first after Thomas Wamester (1-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB) drew a walk on a wild pitch that scored the first run.

Coginchaug extended their early lead with two runs in the top of the second from two RBI singles by Matt Yale (1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Silas Barrett (2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB).

Yale earned the win for Coginchaug. He pitched a complete game shutout only giving up three hits while striking out six and walking three. Giovanni Winters took the loss for Lyme-Old Lyme. He went four and one-third innings, giving up three runs on three hits, striking out six and walking eight. Aidan Carpentino came in to relief and only allowed two hits, one run, one earned, on two and two-thirds innings pitched while striking out four and walking one.

Giovanni Winters (1-2, 1 BB), Rowen Meisner (1-2, 1 BB) and Ben Frazier (1-3) each collected a hit for Lyme-Old Lyme.

Wamester, Barrett, and Yale each drove in one run for Coginchaug. Barrett went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Coginchaug in hits. Tyler Ufferfilge (0-1, 3 BB) led Coginchaug with three walks. Barrett also had two stolen bases.

Death Announced of Charles M. Smith, Resident of Old Lyme for More Than 60 Years; Services Scheduled in OL, May 3

OLD LYME—Charles M. Smith passed away peacefully March 16, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born in New London, Feb. 23, 1940.

Charles joined the U.S. Navy in 1958 …

He met Lynn … and married in September of 1963. They moved to Old Lyme where they spent the rest of their lives raising three sons and welcoming many grandchildren …

He leaves behind his children, Charles Smith Jr. (Carolyn) and Timothy Smith (Kimberley); as well as seven grandchildren … He is predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years Lynn; and his son Thomas.

A funeral service for Charles will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Christ the King Church, Old Lyme, with a graveside ceremony to follow. All friends and family are welcome. Please visit www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com for tributes and directions …

Letter to the Editor: Help Sought to Recover Stolen Duck River Garden Club Birdhouses in Old Lyme; Not Just Decorative, They Symbolized Community Spirit

To the Editor:

I am writing on behalf of the Duck River Garden Club to express our deep disappointment and sadness over a recent incident that has affected one of our beloved civic garden sites. Recently, several handcrafted birdhouses, lovingly built by the husband of one of our dedicated members, were stolen from the garden. 

This garden, located at the bottom of Exit 70 and serving as the gateway to Old Lyme, is a cherished space that welcomes residents and visitors alike with its natural beauty and thoughtful landscaping. The stolen birdhouses were not just decorative additions; they symbolized the community spirit and dedication of our members who work tirelessly to maintain and beautify this important landmark.

The Duck River Garden Club has always strived to create a welcoming and beautiful environment for both residents and wildlife. It is disheartening to see the hard work and the generosity of our members undermined by such senseless acts. We kindly ask that anyone who may have seen suspicious activity at the Exit 70 garden or has any information about the stolen items come forward and contact the local authorities.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank the many residents who have supported our club and cherished our gardens over the years. Your encouragement keeps us motivated. 

As a community, let’s continue to take pride in our public spaces and look out for one another. Together, we can ensure that the Duck River Garden Club’s efforts to beautify our town remain a source of joy for everyone.
