The Copper Beech Inn in the Ivoryton section is expected to reopen in May under new owners, including former East Hampton builder and developer Wayne Rand.  The inn at 46 Main Street, which included two restaurants, closed in February.

The closing followed a foreclosure action in November where Ivoryton-Main LLC of East Hampton foreclosed on CBI Acquisitions of Old Saybrook.  The foreclosure on the partnership that was run by Ian and Barbara Phillips of Old Saybrook lists several other creditors, including Farmington Bank and the state Department of Revenue Services.  CBI Acquisitions had owned the 6.9-acre property since 2006.

Along with the historic inn, the property included two others buildings with rooms for rent, the newest constructed about five years ago.  A fine dining restaurant, called the Copper Beech Inn, had operated in conjunction with the inn under various owners for nearly 40 years, with a separate French bistro-style restaurant called Pips Brasserie added in 2007.

One of the partners in Ivoryton-Main LLC is Wayne Rand, a former East Hampton resident who runs the Rand Construction Company.  Rand currently lives in the former Castle Inn on Long Island Sound in Old Saybrook, which he converted to a private residence.  Workers, including some who identified Rand as the new owner, have been on the site since the beginning of the month, when a sign was posted announcing, “Closed for renovations- reopening in four weeks.”

In a brief interview at the site Saturday, Rand confirmed that he and other partners in Ivoryton-Main LLC held some of the debt on the property.  He said the inn and at least one restaurant are expected to reopen in early May.  Another sign announcing a pending application to the Connecticut Liquor Control Commission lists Michael Fitzgerald as the prospective permittee for the restaurant’s bar.

Rand referred any further comment on the planned reopening to Claudio Marasco of Westbrook, who is the vice presdient, chief financial officer, and general counsel for Waters Edge Resort and Spa on the waterfront in Westbrook.

But when contacted Monday, Marasco declined to elaborate on his connection to Rand and Ivoryton-Main LLC.  He said Water’s Edge Resort and Spa is not involved with the planned use of the Ivoryton property, which is assessed at $1,540,900 on the current grand list of taxable property.

The Lyme-Old Lyme Science Olympiad team comprised of both middle and high schoolers wear their medals with pride after their victory in the State Championship.

The Lyme-Old Lyme Science Olympiad team was jubilant last Saturday at the State Championship  where they won first place and qualified to attend the National Science Olympiad to be held on May 17-18, in Dayton, Ohio.

The Lyme-Old Lyme team, which consists of both middle as well as high school students, enthusiastically competed in a total of 23 events in science, technology and engineering.  Judges for each of the individual events carefully evaluated each entry in the contest that was held at Irving Robbins Middle School, Farmington, Conn.

Events such as “Keep the Heat”, “Mission Possible”,   “Boomilever”, “Anatomy”, “Experimental Design”, “Rocks and Minerals”, “Reach for the Stars”, “Helicopters”, “Crime Busters”, “Forestry” and “Mousetrap Car” kept the Lyme-Old Lyme team in a frenzy of activity all day long.

Students and coaches from the Lyme-Old Lyme team have worked relentlessly to prepare for this state championship since October 2012.  This after-school science club led by Shannon Glorioso, Lucy Walter and  John Walter were assisted by a team of Lyme-Old Lyme High School students: Meredith Britton, Maddie Williams, Thomas Roth, and Rob Melchreit.  Ashley Glorioso and several dedicated parents have also been instrumental in the team’s success.

The coaches, who have been working with a team of 6th  through 9th graders, have met with the students two to three times a week after school, as well as at weekends to prepare for the event.  Coaches Walter and Glorioso continue to be impressed with the team effort and Glorioso comments, “We are so excited that a legacy of teamwork between our high school and middle school students continues to flourish.”

These two science teachers began competing in Science Olympiad tournaments six years ago so that they could share their own enthusiasm, passion and love for science with like-minded students.  Their efforts paid off at last year’s state tournament when the Lyme-Old Lyme team won first place in that competition.

This year, the team repeated its success giving parents and coaches of the Lyme-Old Lyme students the opportunity to celebrate the team’s hard work as the students ran up to the medal podium a total of 26 times in the 23-event competition!

Glorioso added, “The team is very excited to be given the opportunity to compete nationally and wishes to extend its thanks to Benchmark Wealth Management for their gracious support of our Science Olympiad team.  We have been able to reach a new level of excellence this year and look forward to continuing with this amazing path of learning.”

Roach Retires in June After 38 Memorable Years at Old Lyme

Region 18 Athletic Director Rob Roach is retiring in June after 38 years in Lyme-Old Lyme Public Schools as both a Social Studies teacher and Athletic Director.  He leaves the small school as one with a strong and well-respected athletic heritage, one that really starts with Roach himself when he scored the game-winning goal for the boy’s soccer team in 1966 that brought Old Lyme its first state championship.
