Lyme Library Hosts ‘Present Day Ukraine: An Insider’s View,’ Thursday

LYME—On Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., a Lyme resident who recently traveled to Ukraine will help present an “insider’s view” at the Lyme Public Library.

The discussion and slideshow, titled “Present Day Ukraine: An Insider’s View,” will reveal the country through three different perspectives highlighting the efforts of the humanitarian volunteer organization Plebeian Helpers.

Joining local resident Gina DiGuardia, who visited Ukraine to assist in Plebeian Helpers‘ work, will be two Wesleyan University professors from the Eurasian studies department and a Ukrainian student currently in the U.S.

Learn more about the current situation in Ukraine from people, who have seen things first-hand, and to learn about how you can help support the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom.

Ukrainian refreshments will be served.

Lyme Library Hosts Used Book Sale, Tomorrow & Saturday

LYME–The offerings at the Lyme Public Library this month include a wide array of readings, classes, clubs and unique explorations of the arts with some big names.

These are just a few of the events on the September schedule: 

Friends of the Lyme Library Used Book Sale

Friday, Sept. 12  and Saturday, Sept. 13 

The Friends of the Lyme Library will kick off their annual used book sale on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.

On Saturday, books will be sold at half price from 10 a.m to noon for the first half of the sale. From 12:30 to 4 p.m., shoppers will able to fill a bag for $10.

Organizers describe the books as near-new at very discounted prices. 

“Twice Told Tales” with Janet Roach

6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23

An evening of entertainment and community connection returns with local Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, Janet Roach, as she guides the audience through some of her favorite films. 

Twice Told Tales, held in two installments, will feature two movies with similar plots from different directors. It kicks off with “Philadelphia Story,” directed by George Cukor, starring Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and James Stewart. The romantic comedy follows a rich divorcee, her ex-husband and a tabloid reporter through all the emotional fireworks on the eve of her remarriage. 

The second installment on Oct. 7 will feature the musical comedy “High Society,” followed by a potluck dinner.

‘David Ruggles Week’ Concludes at Lyme Library with Painting of Community Mural Celebrating Ruggles, Saturday

Acclaimed Local Artist Nancy Gladwell to Lead Mural Creation

LYME, CT—Lyme Public Library hosts a special ‘David Ruggles Week’ next week from Monday, June 23, through Saturday, June 28. To register to attend any of the events listed below in person ot to receive the Zoom meeting invitation, email programreg@lymepl.org or call 860- 434- 2272.

The schedule of programs is as follows:

June 23  (Monday) @ 6 p.m.
Local historian Jim Lampos will discuss the life, work and, historical impact of the African-American Abolitionist and Lyme native son David Ruggles.on American society
Lyme Library Community Room or Zoom

June 24  (Tuesday) @  6 p.m.
Professor and historian Dr. Jonathan Wells, Professor in the history of Afroamerican and African studies, will be appearing via Zoom to speak about his book “The Kidnapping Club: Wall Street, Slavery, and Resistance on the Eve of the Civil War”. Dr. Wells will recount how journalist, abolitionist and Lyme native son, David Ruggles, worked tirelessly, and at the risk of his own life to bring to light the injustices of institutional corruption that allowed slavery to continue to flourish in America on the eve of the American Civil War. 

Wednesday, June 25 @ 2 p.m. (Zoom)
Local historian Tom Schuch will be speaking about the Ruggles legacy and his genealogical connections to Lyme via Zoom.

Thursday, June 26th @ 6 p.m. (Zoom)
Dr. Graham Hodges, author of “David Ruggles: A Radical Abolitionist and the Underground Railroad in New York City” will speak about how David Ruggles saved lives via the Underground Railroad.

Saturday, June 28 2-4 p.m.
Calling artists of all ages to help make history happen at the library!

Local artist Nancy Gladwell, who is a member of PARJE (Public Art for Racial Justice Education), will be assisting all the artists (no age limit so adults and children are encouraged to attend) to come by and participate in painting a mural for the Lyme Library about the hero, abolitionist and Lyme native son, David Ruggles. The mural created will be proudly displayed in the library upon its completion.

Come in and help promote and participate in the legacy of racial justice that Mr. Ruggles fought so hard to uphold and make history happen at the Lyme Library.

Drop ins welcome. Refreshments will be provided.
