Valley/Old Lyme Warriors Defeat GNH 26-14, Advance to Saturday’s Class SS Football State Final

DEEP RIVER —  Sixth-seeded Valley/Old Lyme emerged victorious in a thrilling 26-14 victory over No. 7 seeds Gilbert-Northwestern-Housatonic (GNH) Sunday afternoon in a CIAC Class SS semifinal. The game, played at the Valley Regional High School (VRHS) field, drew a huge crowd of vocal supporters.

Senior Nick Cox, who made some key plays for the Warriors in Sunday’s game, told LymeLine.exclusively by text after the game that he felt, “Amazing after the win.” He added that he was also, “Very proud of our team.” Cox now attends VRHS but previously was a student at Lyme-Old Lyme High School.

Asked why he thought the Warriors had been able to pull off the win, Cox responded that he felt the team was successful primarily, “Because we were well prepared.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s final, Cox commented, “I’m hoping we’ll be just as prepared [as we were for the semifinal]” but, recognizing all the challenges that accompany a state final, he added realistically, “We know it’ll be the toughest test all year.”

Joel Barlow High School, seeded fifth, defeated top-seeded Cromwell 40-35 in the other semifinal and will face Valley/Old Lyme in the final on Saturday, Dec. 10, at a place and time to be determined.

Valley/Old Lyme Football Pulls Off Huge Win in State Class SS Quarters, Advances to Semis

MILFORD — On Tuesday night, flouting all predictions and pulling off a major upset, the football co-op of Valley Regional/Old Lyme (10-1), seeded sixth, defeated the No. 3 seeds Foran 26-13 at the Vito DeVito Sports Complex in Milford.

Jake Rand, who attends Lyme-Old Lyme High School, and Nick Cox of Old Lyme, who attends Valley Regional HS, were major contributors to the victory.

The Valley/Old Lyme team will now meet No. 7 Gilbert/Northwestern (9-2) in the semi-final on Sunday, Dec. 4, with a 12:30 p.m. kick-off at the Valley Regional High School field in Deep River.

The other semi-final will see top-seeded Cromwell/Portland (10-1) face No. 9 seeds Barlow (9-2) at Cromwell, also with a 12:30 p.m. kick-off.

Old Lyme Freshman Chase Gilbert Places 13th in New England X-Country, Awarded 2nd Team All-New England Honors

OLD LYME — Capping an extraordinary season, Lyme-Old Lyme High School freshman sensation Chase Gilbert finished 13th in Saturday’s New England Cross-Country Championships, in which the ‘best of the best’ compete. She was the highest-placed freshman in the whole event, which was held at Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, R.I.

The All-New England Cross-Country Championships Awards Ceremony at which Chase Gilbert was given Second Team honors.

Gilbert was subsequently awarded Second Team All-New England Honors for Cross-Country at the Awards Ceremony, pictured above, based on her performance at the Championships.

Gilbert’s time of 19:04 is a new school record as well as a best time ever for a Lyme -Old Lyme female athlete at any New England championship.

Additionally Gilbert’s winning time of 18:07 at the Shoreline Championship is the fastest high school female athlete 5K time in the state.

Old Lyme Soccer Boys March Boldly Into State Quarterfinals

MONTVILLE — Playing away, Old Lyme soundly defeated Saint Bernard High School 3-0 Wednesday in the second round of the CIAC Class S State Tournament. 

Anders Silberberg, pictured left, scored twice for the Wildcats and Luke Celic added a third goal. Lucas Dasilva contributed an assist. 

Jonah Lathrop made three saves for Old Lyme while Dan O’Brien had eight saves for St. Bernard 

Old Lyme now advances to the quarterfinals Friday with a home game against Notre Dame-Fairfield. Kick-off is 2 p.m.
