Come Celebrate—the Carousel in Old Lyme is Turning 100!

ESSEX–The Essex Savings Bank is shortening its name.
The institution, which has a branch in Old Lyme, announced it will be known as Essex Bank as of Oct. 1. Its new logo is shown at left.
President and CEO Diane Arnold in a press release said the new name better reflects the bank’s expanding services, including trust and wealth management services.
“As we prepare to celebrate our 175th anniversary, we have been listening closely,” Arnold said. “Again and again, our customers tell us, ‘You are so much more than a savings bank.’ And they are right.”
The bank was founded by a group of local shipmasters, businessmen, and entrepreneurs in 1851. The bank said the founders’ tenets of highly personal service hold today, with team members answering each customer phone call, and the Bank’s Community Investment Program – which it said is the first of its kind in the state of Connecticut — supporting hundreds of local nonprofit organizations each year.
Essex Savings Bank is an FDIC-insured, state-chartered, mutual savings bank established in 1851. The Bank serves the Connecticut River Valley and shoreline with six offices in the area. Apart from the Old Lyme one, the remaining offices are in Essex (2), Chester, Madison, and Old Saybrook.
Together the offices provide a full complement of personal and business banking. In addition, the bank has been instituting more modern technologies, digital platforms, and lifestyle features.
Along with the October name change, Essex Bank will also launch a new website with expanded resources for customers to understand their banking options.

LYME, CT — Lyme Home Watch has earned accreditation from the National Home Watch Association (NWHA) for the third year.
Home Watch uses visual inspections to check for obvious issues at vacation or primary homes while the owners are away, according to a press release from the association. NWHA has been around since 2009, ensuring that all principals of NHWA-accredited member companies are background checked, insured and bonded.
Owner Bill Hurtle said the need for his services became evident as he saw friends and family head south for the winter, leaving their home unoccupied or having a non-professional “home watcher” monitor their property.
Hurtle is a resident of Lyme since 2013. For about two decades, he worked as a microbiologist for the Department of Homeland Security. Prior to that, he was employed by the Department of the Army and at the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Frederick, Maryland.
Lyme Home Watch’s primary mission is to provide house checks for the exterior and interior of a home. They also provide pre- and post-storm checks, facilitate contractor and vendor meetings, and offer keyholder services to their clients.
Hurtle is a graduate of the NHWA’s Home Watch Boot Camp and has earned the designation of Certified Home Watch Professional, which places him among the élite Home Watch providers in the industry.
Lyme Home Watch serves Lyme, Old Lyme, Niantic, Old Saybrook, Essex, and Westbrook.

OLD LYME—Tomorrow, Old Lyme Hardware will host an Easter Egg Hunt in the store starting at 10 a.m. All are welcome.
Some 40 children participated in the Hunt last year. This year, Talerico plans to hide 1,000 eggs filled with candy, toys and cash.
Asked why she hosts the Easter Egg Hunt—now in its fourth year—Jessica Talerico, the co-owner of Old Lyme Hardware, told LymeLine, “Initially we thought the Easter Egg Hunt would be a fun way to bring people into the store that hadn’t been in yet – to show we were making some changes. The families that came loved it, and so did we! After that first egg hunt, it was decided we had to make this a tradition at the store for the community and for us.”

To raise proceeds to fund the event, the store is currently hosting a raffle with all proceeds going towards the store’s Easter Egg Hunt. Tickets are $10 each and the prizes on offer are a gas-powered Ooni Pizza Oven or a 28” Blackstone Griddle. The first winner drawn can make his/her own choice of prize.
The draw will be held April 12 and the winner does not need to be present.
Also, on April 12, between 10 a.m. and 12 noon, the Easter Bunny will be hopping by both Old Lyme Hardware and The Bowerbird.
