A View From My Porch: A Short History of the Halls Road Overlay District (HROD), Why it is ‘a Worthy Project’

Tom Gotowka

Feb. 16, 2025—Prologue:
I read a fluorescent green flyer Sunday morning that was seeking signatures on an online petition; which I ignored.

The flyer disparaged the Halls Road Overlay District (HROD) and, of course, had no author or organization. It was anonymous; and began “BEWARE!” and then went on saying something about “A WOLF IN SHEEP’s CLOTHING!!” that may have been on the “tip of an iceberg.”

Then, Anonymous speciously claimed that the proposal included “dense housing” — i.e., “eighty bedrooms per acre;” which was false; but has unfortunately also appeared in other similar attacks.

Anonymous continued with a recommended list of websites to visit and “scroll through for pertinent information;” and that may have been “the straw that broke the camel’s back.” Further, the Halls Road Improvements Committee (HRIC) noted last week in LymeLine that “there have been a wave of posts on social media and elsewhere making claims that misrepresent the actual content of the HROD proposal and distort its possible impact on our community. The true facts will not support these assertions, nor the emotional appeals based on horrifying and totally false claims.”

Nonetheless, that flyer and a few Letters to the Editor, comments, and essays in LymeLine inspired me to devote this “View” to the proposed HROD.

I present the project’s key milestones in roughly chronological order in this “View — and rather than a detailed play-by-play on the activities of the HRIC team since its inception (see HRIC section below); I consider their vision, which is detailed in “The Master Plan.”

Note that this essay reflects my observations, opinions, and interpretation of available HRIC documents and materials.

Halls Rd. is a unique thoroughfare within the “friendly confines” of Old Lyme. Located amongst four Interstate 95 entrances and exits and zoned commercial-only, it is Old Lyme’s principal retail and commercial district and has a 1950s and 60s strip mall look, with deep set-backs and large parking lots lining the roadway.

Within the past few decades, Halls Rd. assumed the appearance and function of an interstate service area. Traffic is dense and moves at a very fast pace from traffic light to traffic light on this “Halls Road Raceway.” There are no sidewalks or safe crosswalks. Bicycling is dangerous.

The Halls Road Improvements Committee (HRIC):

In 2015, Old Lyme’s Board of Selectmen (BOS) appointed a committee to address some developing community concerns regarding Halls Rd. The BOS’ charge became complex and has required interaction with several Connecticut agencies and cooperation with many Town commissions and departments.

HRIC Milestones:

  • In collaboration with the Yale Urban Design Workshop, the HRIC conducted an objective evaluation of the existing conditions on Halls Rd. Several public meetings were held at which the community was encouraged to voice their concerns and wishes; and it was determined that residents wanted the Town’s commercial area to look more like Old Lyme — and specifically, have the “look and feel” of Lyme Street.
  • Working with the New England-based BSC Group for their expertise in civil and environmental engineering and strategic planning for communities like Old Lyme, the HRIC initiated development of a long-range plan for Halls Rd.
  • “A formal ‘Master Plan’ is an important tool in seeking grants for work on Halls Rd., for encouraging investment, and for setting budgets” and “broad goals designed to insure the future of Old Lyme’s main shopping district.”
  • AI Engineers of Middletown, CT developed design and engineering materials for the new “Bow Bridge.” Designs were presented at workshops and residents voted their preference.
  • Advance CT conducted an economic development study via surveys and workshops in 2020 on behalf of Old Lyme’s Economic Development Commission, and found that, “Over 80 percent of respondents supported additional development in the Halls Rd. area.”
  • Developed Halls Rd. Overlay District (HROD) Design Guidelines for new construction or updates to current properties. (also see below)
  • On June 17, 2024, provided a status update to the Old Lyme Board of Selectmen.
  • On January 10, 2025, the Planning Commission voted unanimously that the proposed zoning overlay was consistent with Old Lyme’s Plan of Conservation and Development, which was adopted in February, 2021

Approvals:

  • Any work along a state motorway requires a DOT “encroachment permit.” In practice, such permits are usually sought in connection with applications for relevant grants administered by DOT.
  • Septic and groundwater approvals are regulated by Ledge Light Health District.

The ‘Halls Road Master Plan’ Vision:

Create a walkable, bike-able, mixed-use town center along Halls Rd. —  one that is an attractive place to live, work, browse, meet, and do business. The envisioned changes include:

  • Roadway and sidewalk improvements, including pedestrian lighting, to create safe pedestrian and bike routes along Halls Rd. from Lyme Street to Rte. 156 and the Baldwin Bridge — connecting Halls Rd. to the Arts, Historic and municipal center(s) on Lyme St.
  • Improvements to existing public green space that could include trails, a riverside park, and new town green.
  • A new “Bow Bridge” — reminiscent of Childe Hassam’s 1908 impressionist landscape, “Bridge at Old Lyme,” which features the original bridge, spanning the Lieutenant River at the old bridge abutment, connecting to trails through the green space. Note that this pedestrian- and biker-friendly bridge was consistently the single, most popular element suggested in town-wide surveys conducted at the beginning of the planning process.
  • Further, CT DEEP owns a triangle of property on the east bank of the Lieutenant River and is prepared to deed this property to the Town; but has requested that a fishing pier and 8 parking spots be included in the project. Note that Project design work for the bridge and trails was fully-funded with grants that covered concept design, surveys, permitting, and construction documents.
  • The Harbor Management Commission has requested that a floating dock be added to the pier.
  • Residential alternatives for seniors considering a “downsize,” who might otherwise have limited options for remaining in Old Lyme — and/or young people looking to move into the community.

These include small apartments above businesses with first floor retail; but could possibly include town houses. — but that is not a “given.”

  • New commercial buildings in the HROD must include mixed use with retail/offices on the first floor and residential on the second.
  • Current property owners can choose to stay put without modification; but if they want to take advantage of the HROD, must include mixed use.

The Jargon:

A mixed-use neighborhood includes both housing and commercial/retail spaces; and often provides housing options and services accessible to all income levels.

It is not uncommon to find pharmacies, restaurants and cafes, delis, dry cleaners, and grocery and hardware stores within walking distance.

Waxing poetic, mixed use neighborhoods offer a lifestyle option for those who do not have a desire to live in the suburbs or in places that are dedicated to residential uses only.

The vibrant nature of mixed use neighborhoods derives from the fact that these areas are more active for more hours of the day, rather than just a few hours in the morning and a few in the evening.

Design Guidelines:

New guidelines and supportive “Village District” zoning are designed to attract retail and residential investment that will serve the needs of Old Lyme and create a ‘look and feel’ on Halls Rd. that is in keeping with the rest of the town; but still require conformance with current zoning and established architectural standards.

The HROD includes a Design Review Committee as a first step for developers to ensure that the scale and design of any proposed construction is consistent with the aesthetics and character of Old Lyme prior to going before the Zoning Commission for project approval.

Author’s Thoughts:

I was impressed with the depth and detail included in project documents supporting this thoughtful and well-planned initiative.

This is a worthy project and the end result will be important. Nevertheless, I discovered in my research that the discourse on HROD was surprisingly mean-spirited; and I wondered where that attitude was coming from.

I used “the friendly confines,” phrase above to describe Old Lyme; Chicago Cubs fans will recognize that it was coined by Hall of Fame shortstop Ernie Banks as the nickname for Wrigley Field—”Win or lose, it’s always a good afternoon at the Friendly Confines.”

Editor’s Note: This is the opinion of Thomas D. Gotowka.

About the Author: Tom Gotowka is a resident of Old Lyme, whose entire adult career has been in healthcare. He will sit on the Navy side at the Army/Navy football game. He always sit on the crimson side at any Harvard/Yale contest. He enjoys reading historic speeches and considers himself a scholar of the period from FDR through JFK. A child of AM Radio, he probably knows the lyrics of every rock and roll or folk song published since 1960. He hopes these experiences give readers a sense of what he believes “qualify” him to write this column.

A View from My Porch: A Heartbeat Away

Tom Gotowka

The title of this “View” is an allusion to The United States Order of Presidential Succession, which defines the sequence in which the vice president of the United States and other officers of the federal government would assume the powers and duties of the U.S. Presidency.

That defined Order of Succession is that the Office of the President will pass to the vice president for the remainder of the term upon the elected president’s incapacity, death, resignation, or removal from office. If the vice president is unable to serve, the Speaker of the House will act as President.

Note that the sources that define the presidential order of succession are the Constitution of the United States and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947.

A vice president has ascended to the Office of the President due to death or resignation nine times in the history of the United States. (see Appendix at foot of article.)

Accordingly, I consider the candidacy of JD Vance in this essay; and try to determine exactly how JD Vance, a politician who’s a little more than two years into his first elected office, become the GOP’s nominee for vice president? Is he qualified for the top job?

It is a possibility that must be considered. Donald Trump would be the oldest person ever sworn in as President; and concerns about his physical, emotional, and cognitive health have increased.

I will present my thoughts in his own words, citing direct quotes.

Once again, although Trump told CBS News in August that he would “very gladly” release his medical information, he has yet to comply and continues to withhold any real details about his health. He did say he had just had a medical exam and received a “perfect score,” and two cognitive tests, which he said he “aced.” “I got everything right,” Trump said. “And one of the doctors said, ‘I’ve never seen that before, where you get everything right.’” Wow!

If you read my last two “Views,” — “Why I Vote,” which were serialized in LymeLine, you know why I cannot, in good conscience, support the candidacy of Donald Trump—a convicted felon—who promises an administration of retribution, revenge, and retaliation against his opponents and perceived “enemies;” which now include Google, who he claims has been “illegally showing only ‘bad’ stories about him and only ‘good’ ones about Kamala Harris.”

Incredibly, Trump has demanded, via posts on social media, a televised military tribunal for Liz Cheney, and the jailing of top elected officials, including President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

I reviewed Trump’s rally speeches, the Hitleresque themes of several of his rallies, his hatred for immigrants, creepy obsession with crowd size; and his nearly constant use of ridiculous insults and threatening rhetoric and statements; all of which became worse and more unhinged when he reverted to his old favorites, racism and misogyny as the Harris campaign progressed.

Note that the observations and opinions presented in this, and all my “Views,” are my own.

I assessed several political and legal events in Trump’s life that illustrate his moral and ethical principles; and found a man of highly compromised character. I detailed the repeated insults he has aimed at our veterans and military heroes; and the praise he has directed at our enemies like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un; and concluded that he is remarkably ill-suited for the role of Commander in Chief of America’s Armed Forces. Trump has also said that he wants military leadership that mimics the Nazi high command.

I showed that Trump and his allies regularly attack the mainstream media, often singling out The Washington Post, the NY Times, and CNN as “fake news” and “the enemy of the people.”

Crowd Size:

Trump tried to elevate himself to the level of World War II British prime minister, Winston Churchill when he addressed an Indiana, PA rally on Sept. 23. Although Trump did acknowledge Churchill as a “great speaker,” he proposed that he himself should be included in that category and complained, “I get much bigger crowds than him, “but nobody ever says I’m a great speaker.”

About a week earlier, he had also declared that he attracted bigger crowds than Elvis Presley, saying, “I’m the greatest of all time, maybe greater even than Elvis.”

The Nominee:

James David (JD) Vance is a man of flexible values; who has evolved into Trump’s “attack dog.”

Vance was once a fervent critic of Donald Trump and had been a key voice in the “Never Trump” movement during the 2016 election. “I’m a Never Trump guy,” Vance said in an interview with Charlie Rose.

In February 2016, Vance posited that Trump was “cultural heroin; and a few months later wrote in The Atlantic that, “During this election season, it appears that many Americans have reached for a new pain reliever. It too, promises a quick escape from life’s cares, an easy solution to the mounting social problems of U.S. communities and culture. It demands nothing and requires little more than a modest presence and maybe a few enablers. It enters minds, not through lungs or veins, but through eyes and ears, and its name is Donald Trump.”

Vance sent an e-mail to his former law school roommate, Josh McLaurin, who is now a Democratic state senator in Georgia (McLaurin has publicly shared the message.) Vance wrote “I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical A-hole like Nixon, who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler.” How’s that for discouraging?

McLaurin said, “I never could have dreamed during those exchanges in 2016 that he would end up being one of the principal reinforcers of Trumpism only a few years later.”

In an interview with NPR in August, 2016, Vance said, “If I feel like Trump has a really good chance of winning, I might have to hold my nose and vote for Hillary Clinton,”

Speaking with CNN in October 2016, Vance criticized Trump for “actively antagonizing” Black voters, claiming this tactic was a long-standing Republican strategy.

“It’s not just that Donald Trump doesn’t speak to issues of special concern of minority voters or Black voters, it’s that he seems to like actively antagonizing a lot of the Black voters.”

“I think that Trump will probably lose,” he wrote in June 2020, a few months before ballots were cast in an election that Vance would later claim, falsely and repeatedly, was stolen by the Democrats.

The Transformation:

I cannot speculate on what occurred to Vance as he contemplated a bid for the Ohio Senate seat, but he became a “new believer” and launched an intense yearlong effort to fabricate a new image as a leading MAGA proponent with appearances on Fox News and meetings at Mar-a-Lago.

He earned Trump’s endorsement in the Ohio Republican Senate primary and was elected to the Senate in 2022; he was also funded heavily by pro-Trump tech mogul Peter Thiel. Note that he had apologized well ahead of his Senate campaign for calling Trump “reprehensible” over his anti-immigrant rhetoric.

During his Senate campaign, Vance denounced what he described as a “cabal” of public health experts led by White House adviser Anthony S. Fauci, that he said was seeking to suppress American liberties with unreasonable pandemic restrictions.

Cat Ladies:

In a 2021 interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Senate-candidate Vance complained that the U.S. was being run by Democrats, corporate oligarchs and “a bunch of childless cat ladies, who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.”

The VP Debate:

Vance is a master of mis-direction, thus failing to answer direct questions

Vance claimed that Trump “peacefully gave over power on January 20th and said, “I believe we do have a threat to democracy in this country, but it’s not the threat that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz want to talk about. It’s the threat of censorship.”

Vance lied about the state bill Walz signed to guarantee abortion rights, casting it as enabling infanticide, even as he falsified his own advocacy for a national abortion ban.

Astonishingly, he claimed that Trump “saved” the Affordable Care Act. “He worked in a bipartisan way to ensure that Americans had access to affordable care.”  Another attempt by Vance and Trump to rewrite the record …

The Jan. 6 attack, and Trump’s false claims of a stolen election that inspired it represented the final question from the moderators and Vance muffed it; and so Walz then re-asked it as a direct question to Vance, “Well, did he lose the 2020 election?”

“Tim, I’m focused on the future,” Vance replied; to which Walz responded, “That is a damning non-answer.”

The Trump / Vance Campaign:

After his confirmation as VP nominee, Vance attacked President Biden and claimed on Fox News that Americans elected an “empty vessel” in 2020 who is now “an incapacitated president.” He claimed Democrats had lied about Biden’s health.

Cats and Dogs:

Both Trump and Vance have repeatedly, and falsely, asserted that a community of Haitians living in Springfield, Ohio, have been kidnapping pet cats and dogs and eating them.

Here’s the Trump quote from the presidential debate: “In Springfield (Ohio), they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.” As a result of that statement, hospitals, elementary and middle schools, and universities in the area have experienced threats of violence, forcing closures and evacuations.

Worse yet, Vance insists that he will keep calling the Haitian immigrants living in his state “illegal aliens,” saying that he does not consider immigrants who legally settled in the United States under programs managed by the Biden Administration and Vice President Kamala Harris to be lawful residents.” Vance states, “If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m going to do.” Note: My assumption is assume that “to create stories” means to lie.

Vance has downplayed the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, stating that he “doubted” former Vice President Mike Pence’s life was in danger, despite the violent circumstances of that day. “Hang Mike Pence!”

He has echoed Trump’s criticisms of how the Justice Department prosecuted the Capitol attack rioters, alleging that the department disregarded due process protections.

Vance told ABC “This Week” that he “would not have certified the 2020 election results until states submitted pro-Trump electors.”

Hurricane Helene Misinformation:

On arrival in Valdosta, Ga. to view Hurricane Helene’s devastation, Trump claimed that President Biden was “sleeping” and not responding to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who he said was “calling the president and hasn’t been able to get him.”

Kemp had said earlier in the day that he had spoken to the president, who offered any help the state needed and said to call him directly. Trump repeated his false claims at an event with reporters, even after being informed that Gov. Kemp had said that he had already spoken to Biden.

Trump, also claimed without evidence that the federal government and North Carolina’s Democratic governor were “going out of their way to not help people in Republican areas.” Asheville, which was devastated by the storm, is solidly Democratic, as is much of Buncombe County, which surrounds it.

North Carolina Governor Cooper called out Trump’s latest lies that he, “along with “Democrats in Washington,” were blocking aid from coming into the state to help people in need, including President Biden and Kamala Harris, saying, “It’s all over the place—A HORRIBLE SITUATION.”

Cooper said it was “This is a flat-out lie. “We’re working with all partners around the clock to get help to people. Trump’s lies and conspiracy theories have hurt the morale of first responders and people who lost everything, helped scam artists and put government and rescue workers in danger.”

Earlier, Trump boasted that he’d gotten his “buddy” Elon Musk to send Starlink satellites into North Carolina.”

FEMA had already sent 40 Starlinks to the state to restore communications.

All this from the man who, as president, withheld money from hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico for years and on a belated visit tossed paper towels at needy residents. On other occasions, he repeatedly threatened to block money from blue-state governors, notably California’s Gavin Newsom during the 2018 wildfires, while promising “A-plus” treatment for states whose governors supported him.

Notably, President Biden criticized Vance as “a clone of Trump on the issues,” noting, that Vance will do what Mike Pence would not, that is, “Bend over backwards to enable Trump and his extreme agenda, even if it means breaking the law and no matter the harm to the American people.”

I will expand a little on those comments with an anecdote from the cinema: Mini-Me was a character from the Austin Powers trilogy of satirical spy movies. Before Dr. Evil was sent back in time to 1969, his followers made him a clone. The clone was similar in every manner although he was one-eighth his size (although Mini-Me is approximately one-third Dr. Evil’s size). Upon being introduced to his clone, Dr. Evil immediately declared, “I shall call him ‘Mini-Me.’”

Appendix:The Nine

  • John Tyler succeeded William Henry Harrison on his death in April, 1841. Harrison had only served from March 4 to April 4, 1841, the shortest presidency in U.S. history. Note that he was the oldest president-elect to take office until Ronald Reagan in 1981. Harrison’s Inaugural Adress was one hour and 45 minutes long, and was delivered in shirtsleeves in cold, windy weather.  He died of pneumonia on April 4, 1841.
  • Millard Fillmore succeeded Zachary Taylor when Taylor died in July, 1850.
  • Andrew Johnson succeeded Abraham Lincoln upon Lincoln’s assassination on April 15, 1865.
  • Chester A. Arthur succeeded James Garfield on September 19, 1881, upon Garfield’s assassination; after only 199 days as vice president.
  • Theodore Roosevelt succeeded William McKinley as president on September 14, 1901, upon McKinley’s assassination; after 194 days as vice president.
  • Calvin Coolidge succeeded Warren G. Harding as the 30th POTUS on August 2, 1923, upon Harding’s sudden death. Coolidge had been vice president for 2 years, 151 days.
  • Harry Truman succeeded Franklin Delano Roosevelt as the 33rd POTUS on April 12, 1945 after FDR’s death. Truman was a United States senator from Missouri from 1935 to 1945; and served, briefly, as vice president  in 1945.
  • Lyndon Baines Johnson succeeded John F. Kennedy as the 36th POTUS on Nov 22, 1963, upon JFK’s assassination. LBJ had an extensive career in elected office.
  • Gerald R. Ford succeeded Richard M. Nixon when Nixon resigned on August 8, 1974. Ford had an extensive career in elected office.

Author’s Comments: What has happened to the Republican party? These are two labile, volatile men, and they are absolutely out of control and creating havoc. This has become a campaign of lies. There is not even a hint of policy or platform in his “presentations.”

Trump, and now Vance, continue the false claims of election fraud to this day; and so, I am concerned that he will not respect the results of the election when he loses again

The Atlantic has endorsed Kamala Harris for president; only the fifth time since its founding in 1857 that it has endorsed a presidential candidate. This is the third time it has endorsed Trump’s opponent. (The Atlantic endorsed Abraham Lincoln in 1860.)

The endorsement of Harris reflects its thorough dislike of Trump as “one of the most personally malignant and politically dangerous candidates in American history” and echoes its 1860 warning that this election “is a turning-point in our history.” God save the United States of America.

A View from My Porch: A 2024 Election Epic—Part Two: Content of Character (Section 3 of 3)

Editor’s Notes: i) We have divided Part Two of Thomas Gotowka’s essay into three sections. We published Section 1 on Sept. 13 at this link and Section 2 on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at this link. This is the third and final section.
ii) This is the opinion of Thomas D. Gotowka.

The Lady May Caper

Tom Gotowka

Former Trump senior adviser, Steve Bannon, was collected by the USCG from the 151-ft., $28 million mega yacht, Lady May off the Connecticut coast, within sight of the beach houses in Westbrook, early Thursday, Aug. 20, 2020.

Within hours, he was in handcuffs in federal district court in Manhattan, where he pleaded not guilty to accusations that he and two others siphoned money from a fundraising campaign, “We Build the Wall”—one of Trump’s top projects.

Bannon is accused of diverting nearly a million dollars for personal expenses and charged in what federal prosecutors said was a scheme to embezzle hundreds of thousands of dollars from the fundraising campaign.

His colleagues, Brian Kolfage and Andrew Badolato, were sentenced to just over four years and three years in prison, respectively. The fraud charges against Trump’s former chief strategist and the two others are outlined in a federal indictment unsealed in New York Thursday.

Bannon pleaded not guilty by video conference from a holding cell. Afterward, he was released on $5 million bail, secured by $1.75 million in assets.

“Hush Money” Trial

On May 30, 2024, Trump was found guilty of all 34 felony counts for falsifying business records related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star, Stormy Daniels, to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election, making him the first American president to be declared a felon.

During the trial, Trump took to social media to ridicule presiding Judge Juan Manuel Merchan as a “highly conflicted” overseer of a “kangaroo court.”

Election Interference Trial

In the July 1 ruling in Trump v. United States, Chief Justice John Roberts’ opinion said the court is sending the case back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to decide “in the first instance” how the immunity test applies to Trump’s case. As you might recall, the SCOTUS ruling said former presidents are entitled to at least presumptive immunity for all “official acts.”

It is now up to Judge Chutkan’s court to determine whether his conduct in trying to subvert the 2020 election was “official” or “unofficial.”

The “Same ol’, Same ol’”

In an April interview with Time, Trump did not rule  out the possibility of political violence if he loses the November election. “I don’t think we’re going to have that. I think we’re going to win,”

If we don’t win, you know, it depends. It always depends on the fairness of an election,”

Last year he warned on social media, “… of problems if things go wrong for him, before he faced any of his four criminal indictments, that “false” charges against him would bring “potential death & destruction.”

In March, during a campaign rally where he talked about the auto industry, Trump said that the country “would face a “broader bloodbath” if he’s not elected in November. He expanded on that “thought” and turned to immigration, but this time warning of Biden’s “border bloodbath.”

“It’s destroying our country … ” He continued, “Every state is now a border state, every town is now a border town … Because Joe Biden has brought the carnage and chaos and killing from all over the world and dumped it straight into our backyards.” Trump then said “It’s a very bad thing happening.” “It’s going to end on the day that I take office, which will be Jan. 20;” at which time he will presumably initiate his plan to deport 15-20 million people in an effort to make the U.S.A. a “sundown” country.

Still speaking with Time, he referred to his frequent, phony claims of widespread election fraud and said, “I don’t believe they’ll be able to do the things that they did the last time. I don’t think they’ll be able to get away with it. And if that’s the case, we’re gonna win in record-setting fashion.”

Immigration and Southern Border Security

I believe that I’ve demonstrated that Immigrants seem to be Trump’s favorite go-to rant or “off-script” disconnect when he pushes his word salad aside.

In Part 1, I noted Trump’s statement that immigrants who are in the country without authorization are “poisoning the blood” of America. He also repeatedly states his same old claim that “millions of immigrants in the country illegally came from jails, prisons, or mental institutions. — or have been institutionalized in their home countries.”

When Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Gov. Walz as her running mate, Trump posted “He’ll unleash HELL ON EARTH and open our borders to the worst criminals imaginable” (Trump’s upper case letters)

“They’re coming in from China — 31, 32,000 over the last few months — and they’re all military age and they mostly are men,” Trump said during a Pennsylvania rally in the spring. “And it sounds like to me, are they trying to build a little army in our country.”

There is no evidence, that “fighting age” males from China are somehow embedding themselves in the United States.

There is no evidence to support any of Trump’s claims.

The Irony

Trump’s position on immigration has always seemed bizarre to me. Trump is the son, and grandson, of immigrants: German on his father’s side, and Scottish on his mother’s. None of his grandparents, and only one of his parents, was born in the United States or spoke English as their first language. (His mother’s parents, from the remote Scottish Outer Hebrides, lived in a majority Gaelic-speaking community.

Two out of his three wives were immigrants from Eastern Europe.

Congress

Despite his obsession with immigration, Trump lobbied Senate Republicans in private conversations and in public statements on social media to oppose the bipartisan border bill, a significant legislative effort aimed at overhauling U.S. border and immigration policies and a key legislative achievement on a pressing national priority.

Trump opposed the bill primarily because he planned to campaign against Biden on the issue in November and didn’t want Biden to score a victory in a politically vulnerable area.

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell acknowledged in a private meeting that Trump’s animosity toward the border deal puts Republicans in a serious bind as they try to move forward on the already complex issue.

So, he killed a key bit of legislation to assist his campaign?

Author’s Comments

Again, I do not support Trump’s candidacy. I feel that he is a man of severely compromised character; — not what we should want in a President of the United States. His repeated insults directed at our veterans and military heroes; and the praise he has directed at authoritarian despots like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un make him particularly ill-suited for the President’s concomitant role — Commander in Chief of America’s Armed Forces.

As I wrap up, I quote Vice President Harris’ comments in Milwaukee in July, where she used her record as a state prosecutor to draw a distinction between herself and Trump. “I took on perpetrators of all kinds,” she said. “Predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, and cheaters who broke the rules for their gain. “So, hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type.”

Coincidentally, she also took action against the sham Trump University.

I want to leave you with an article from The Code of Conduct for the Armed Forces of the United States, which Candidate Trump may not have encountered in his high school military training:

Article VI: I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.

In closing, may God bless America and may God protect our troops.

A View from My Porch: A 2024 Election Epic—Part Two: Content of Character (Section 1 of 3)

Editor’s Notes: i) We have divided Part Two of Thomas Gotowka’s essay into three sections. We will publish Sections 2 and 3 on Tuesday, Sept. 17 and Thursday, Sept. 19, respectively.
ii) This is the opinion of Thomas D. Gotowka.

Tom Gotowka

If you read Part 1 of this “View,” (which was serialized in three parts in LymeLine at these links: Section 1, Section 2 and Section 3), you would conclude that I am very troubled by one of the candidates in the upcoming presidential election, Donald J. Trump.

I began that “View” at the debate between Biden and Trump, and considered the events that occurred right afterwards; which led to the emergence of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for President of the United States.

I then reviewed, via direct quotes from Trump’s speeches, the Hitler-esque themes of some of his rallies, his bizarre obsession with crowd size, his shocking rhetoric, and his nearly constant use of insults, threatening language, and statements that are totally untrue; which got worse as Kamala Harris’ campaign progressed and he became aware that he could be facing another loss.

As I noted in Part 1, the above title is derived from Martin Luther King, Jr’s Aug. 28, 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech, in which he states that “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

In this “View,” I present several events in Trump’s life that I believe are good indicators of his “character.;” which I define as the moral and ethical principles and qualities that guide an individual’s behavior and decision-making, which is certainly important for someone who wants to try being President again.

In doing so; I also provide support regarding my statement in Part 1 that Trump is “particularly ill-suited for the President’s concomitant role — Commander in Chief of America’s Armed Forces.”

I have reprised a trope from JFK’s 1960 campaign, where it was used to gauge the honesty of his Republican opponent, Richard Nixon; and so, before voting in November, please ask yourself, “Would I buy a used car from this man” (or woman?”)

“The Central Park Five”:

In the Spring of 1989, Trump took out full page ads in New York’s four major newspapers, the New York Times, the Daily News, the New York Post and New York Newsday; and demanded the death penalty for the “Central Park Five” — five black teenagers falsely accused of raping a white woman in Central Park. “I want to hate these muggers and murderers,” Trump wrote. “They should be forced to suffer and, when they kill, they should be executed for their crimes.”

Their convictions, based on coerced confessions, were vacated in 2002 after DNA evidence linked a serial rapist to the brutal crime. When arrested, the five were between 14- and 16-years-old: sentenced separately, they spent between six and 13 years in prison.

In the decades since the now “Exonerated Five’s” convictions were overturned, Trump has refused to retract his statements, shamelessly arguing “They had admitted guilt.”

The “Exonerated Five” appeared at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Yusef Salaam, now a member of New York’s City Council, said Trump, “Never changed, and he never will,” adding, “He wanted us dead; he still stands by the original guilty verdict.”

Trump vs. Amazon:

During his “fake news” phase, Trump began threatening Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, because he was upset with The Washington Post’s coverage of his campaign, which he called “unfair.” Bezos had purchased The Washington Post in 2013 for $250 million. Trump also called out The NY Times for treating him unfairly.

Trump often referred to The Washington Post as the “Amazon Washington Post;” although Amazon does not own the Post—Bezos owns it.

Trump went on to threaten, “[We] would use libel laws to go after the press in the courts when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles.” He noted, “We can sue them and win lots of money.” Bezos responded with an offer of a free trip to orbit, via another of his companies, rocket-maker “Blue Origin.”

In a related Trump lawsuit. New York Judge Robert R. Reed ordered Donald Trump to pay $392,638 in legal fees to The New York Times after his failed lawsuit against the news outlet and its journalists over the disclosure of his tax information in a 2018 NY Times article.

Note that an Amazon Prime membership currently costs $139 per year. Trump’s shiny, gold, high-top sneakers were introduced earlier this year for $399; the Trump bible is $59.99; and his perfume and cologne are $99 per bottle.

Birther Nonsense:

In March, 2011 Trump began saying that he had “real doubts” about whether President Obama had a U.S. birth certificate, commenting, “There’s something on that birth certificate that Obama doesn’t like.” He alluded that the specific “something” could be, “It says he’s a Muslim.”

Trump then claimed that he was sending a team of private investigators to Hawaii to learn the truth and promised to donate $5 million to charity if anyone could convince him that Obama was born on US soil.

President Obama’s Response:

In an extraordinary moment in his presidency, Obama produced his long-form birth certificate in the White House briefing room in April 2011. He said, “We’re not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers,” clearly referring to Trump. After releasing his birth certificate, the President went further and presented what he called his “birth video” at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The video clip was from Disney’s “The Lion King” and showed the grand unveiling of the baby Simba in Africa.

Finally, on Sept. 16, 2016, after continuing the lie about Obama’s birthplace for nearly five years, Trump read a statement at a “press conference” that lasted just 40 seconds, finally admitting to the world that he knew President Barack Obama was, in fact, born in the United States. Predictably, there is no record of a $5 million donation to charity.

Trump’s embrace of the birther controversy seemed outlandish when it began. In retrospect, it looks like a prototype for the fact-challenged approach he has continued to adopt in all his campaigns. Of course, he attempted a new variation of his birther claptrap at the National Association of Black Journalists Conference (see Part 1), after which VP Kamala Harris commented, “It was the same old show.”

Losers  and Suckers et al:

In a statement to CNN published October 2023, Trump’s former Chief of Staff, General John Kelly contemptuously criticized Trump, while finally confirming the 2020 report in The Atlantic regarding Trump’s insults and derogatory statements directed at veterans, titled, “Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’.” He detailed objectionable comments that Trump made behind closed doors during his presidency; and corroborated several similarly negative stories attacking U.S. service members and veterans.

Predictably Steven Cheung, Trump’s thuggish campaign spokesperson, responded with insults, saying, “John Kelly has totally clowned himself with these debunked stories he’s made up because he didn’t serve his President well while working as Chief of Staff.”

The “et al.”

On July 18, 2015, then-candidate Trump insulted Senator John McCain, saying, “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

He went further and on March 19, 2019, offered this assessment of Senator Mc Cain after his death: “I was never a fan of John McCain and I never will be.” Trump ordered flags at national buildings lowered when McCain’s death was announced, but raised just two days later, bucking a tradition of honoring well-known members of Congress for longer periods of time.

Trump has also declared that he is more knowledgeable than the military’s leadership. “I know more about ISIS than the generals do, believe me,” he bragged in November 2015. “They don’t know much because they’re not winning” he reiterated in June 2016.

Trump’s basis for that ridiculous statement was his high school experience at the New York Military Academy (NYMA); which he claimed as having given him “… more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military.”

Incredibly, Trump has said that he wants military leadership that mimics the Nazi high command. He asked General Kelly, “Why can’t you be like the German generals?” and explained that he wanted generals who were, “Totally loyal” and “Yes-men,” in the same way as the Nazi commanders under Adolf Hitler were.

Kelly gave him an overview of the outcome of World War II in Europe, which included the question, “You do know that they tried to kill Hitler three times and almost pulled it off?”

To set the record straight, Naval aviator John McCain’s A-4 Skyhawk was hit by a surface-to-air missile during a bombing mission over North Vietnam; forcing him to eject, suffering a broken leg; and subsequently leading to his capture and imprisonment for over five years, where he was subjected to intense torture.

NYMA is not West Point—though it did have a few notable attendees including John Angelo Gotti, the mobster, who was the acting boss of the Gambino crime family from 1992 to 1999; Stephen Sondheim, who went on to write “Send In the Clowns for the 1973 musical, “ A Little Night Music; and of course, Donald Trump.

NYMA has shut down and was up for auction until finally filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on March 3, 2015.

In contrast, the United States Military Academy at West Point has been educating and training future commissioned officers for the United States Army since its founding on March 16, 1802.

Tom Gotowka

“I Have a Dream”

Bizarrely, during a press conference on Aug. 8 at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump lashed out at claims that Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech had a larger crowd than his “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6, 2021.

“If you look at Martin Luther King, when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people. “If not, we had more.” And “they said he had a million people, but I had 25,000 people.” “And I’m OK with it because I liked Dr. Martin Luther King.”

The House Select Committee that investigated the events of Jan. 6, 2021 actually estimated that 53,000 people attended Trump’s speech at the White House Ellipse.

In contrast, MLK, Jr. delivered the “I Have a Dream” speech  from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial  in front of a crowd of nearly 250,000 people spread across the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Trump expanded his remarks on his Jan. 6 crowd in response to a reporter’s question regarding the peaceful transfer of power. “If you look at January 6th, which a lot of people aren’t talking about very much;” “I think those people were treated very harshly when you compare them to other things that took place in this country, where a lot of people were killed.”

And he argued that no one was “injured” on Jan. 6. “The biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken to, and I said peacefully and patriotically, which nobody wants to say, but I said peacefully and patriotically, the biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken to.” “I don’t know who’s ever had a bigger crowd than I have, but I had it many times… Nobody’s spoken to crowds bigger than me.”

His weird obsession with crowd size continues. Trump is very frustrated that Harris has been drawing large and enthusiastic rally crowds.  In response to her airport rally in Michigan he posted “Has anyone noticed that Kamala CHEATED at the airport? There was nobody at the plane, and she ‘A-I’d’ it, and showed a massive ‘crowd’ of so-called followers, BUT THEY DIDN’T EXIST!” Note that “A-I” is Artificial Intelligence. He also “freaked” out about the crowd at her rally in Atlanta; versus his; citing Harris’ unfair advantage from participating entertainers.(Trump’s caps)

Trump’s Bedminster, NJ Golf Club

In an Aug. 15 speech at his golf club attended by some of his most prominent Jewish supporters, Trump said, “Jews are facing a climate akin to the run-up to the Holocaust due to the actions of anti-Israel forces.” He ludicrously placed the blame on Harris, while failing to mention antisemitism from his far-right supporters.

He went further and said, “Instead of aggressively confronting these venomous antisemites in her party, Kamala Harris has maneuvered for their support.”

Disgracefully, his speech also included a moment in which he denigrated the appearance of decorated military veterans, while praising Miriam Adelson, the Republican megadonor who, with her husband, has pledged up to $90 million to his reelection; and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from him in 2018.

Trump said, “The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, was much better than the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration; because soldiers who receive the latter had to be severely injured or killed to receive it.”

He did not stop there, but went on and said that “Adelson looked better than some of the wounded veterans who received the Congressional Medal of Honor.” Trump’s remarks  were condemned by many, including his former chief of staff John Kelly, purple heart recipient Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Note that the Adelsons are also supporters of medical research and healthcare delivery organizations.

Helicopter Landings

Along with challenging the size of the crowd at MLK, Jr,’s “I have a Dream” speech during the Aug. 8 press conference at his Florida property, (see “Size” above), Trump also told a story to reporters about being involved in a helicopter emergency landing with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. “I know Willie Brown very well. In fact, I went down in a helicopter with him.” We thought maybe this is the end.” Trump also said that Brown, who is a Democrat, “… told me terrible things” about Kamala Harris.

However, Brown rejected Trump’s account as “obviously wrong” during a phone call later that evening with CNN, saying: “I’ve never been in a helicopter with him in my life.” Asked about Willie Brown’s rebuttal of Trump’s narrative, spokesman Steven Cheung only responded, “Slick Willie!”

Trump may have confused Willie Brown with Jerry Brown, the former governor of California, with whom he did travel by helicopter in 2018, while surveying wildfire damage in the state. Trump attacked the New York Times for its coverage of the press conference, and insisted he had flight records to prove it, despite Mr. Brown’s denial. He threatened a lawsuit, but has yet to provide the evidence.

Gaffe-ing Candidates

Remember how Democrats agonized over Biden’s occasional gaffes? Well, the Republicans have not yet done so with Trump’s.

Although I am certain that each of Trump’s speeches may have had a planned topic, Trump usually veers into disconnected and confusing digressions and tangents that are nearly impossible to follow. He has a few pet themes or paragraphs that he uses over and over and from rally to rally. Brian Kemp and Brad Raffensperger have become his “super-villains.”

He frequently portrayed Biden as confused and mentally unfit for office. However, Trump has bewildered his audience and his allies during his speeches. In September, Trump confused Biden with former President Barack Obama, saying “with Obama, we won an election that everyone said couldn’t be won.”

During the same speech, Trump also said, “We would be in World War II very quickly if we’re going to be relying on” Biden.

I think more troubling for we voting citizens of the United States are the memory lapses and repeated use of a word or phrase during and within a single speech, by a man who wants to again try his hand at POTUS The following illustrates both.

Trump  appeared to mistakenly refer to his-then GOP rival, Nikki Haley, instead of Nancy Pelosi when discussing Jan. 6 at a Concord NH campaign rally in early January, where he spoke for 90 minutes and repeatedly bashed Haley on her smaller crowds.

He suddenly changed tack and appeared to blame her for the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol by his own supporters;  “By the way, they never report the crowd on January 6. You know Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, did you know they destroyed all the information, all of the evidence, everything, deleted and destroyed all of it? All of it. Because of lots of things like Nikki Haley is in charge of security. We offered her 10,000 people, soldiers, National Guards, whatever they want.” They turned it down. They don’t want to talk about that. These are very dishonest people.”

Note that then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was not in charge of Capitol security, and there was no evidence that Trump gave an order to have 10,000 troops ready for Jan. 6.

Author’s Comments: Trump flourishes on insults, lies, shocking rhetoric, and conflict to keep himself and his campaign in the media. Remember when his apologists labeled his “shock-jock” antics as just “Donald being Donald”?

I want to remind readers that there is more at stake on Nov. 5 than the Presidential election. These are the “down ballot” or “down ticket” races that will appear below the presidential election line; and can include Senate and House seats and contests for state and local offices. Those races are particularly important this election because the Republican-controlled House is inept and a mess—voting 749 times this year, but passing just 27 bills into law, thus making this Congress the least productive in decades.

On Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the DNC, Barack Obama said, “We do not need four more years of bluster and bumbling and chaos; we have seen that movie before, and we all know that the sequel is usually worse,” He reminded us that the upcoming election will be a “tight race in a closely divided country.”

He described Donald Trump as “a 78-year-old billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago. It has been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s getting worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala. There’s the childish nicknames, the crazy conspiracy theories, and his weird obsession with crowd sizes.

In closing, May God bless America and may God protect our troops.
