At the time of writing, it appears that, like the majority in the state — but unlike the majority in the rest of the country — Lyme and Old Lyme both chose Hillary Clinton to be President.

Both town experienced exceptionally high voter turnouts, but although Lyme was able to finalize its results in the normal time frame, it was well past 10:15 p.m. before Old Lyme Moderator Larry Peterson was able to announce the results there.  This was due primarily to the Election Day Registrations (EDRs) not being received until almost 9 p.m. from the town hall and then still needing to be processed, which took more than another hour.

In keeping with the final results, both Lyme and Old Lyme voters overwhelmingly chose Democrat Richard Blumenthal to continue as their US Senator, Democrat Joe Courtney to be their US Congressional Representative (2nd), and the uncontested Republican Devin Carney to be their State Representative (23rd).

In Old Lyme, in keeping with the final result, voters returned Republican Paul Formica as their State Senator (20th) for a second term while up in Lyme, unlike the final result, which saw Linares cruise to a comfortable victory in the 12-town district, voters chose Democratic challenger Norm Needleman over incumbent Art Linares (R) to be their State Senator (33rd)

AREAWIDE — Republican State Senator Art Linares of Westbrook was re-elected for a third term Tuesday , defeating his Democratic challenger, Essex First Selectman Norman Needleman, by a decisive margin in the 12- town 33rd District.

Linares, 28, carried at least six district towns, including Clinton, East Haddam, East Hampton, Portland, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook.

Neeedleman, 65, carried Chester, Deep River, Essex, and Lyme. The margin in Deep River was a close 12 votes 1,268 for Needleman to 1,256 for Linares,. Results were still outstanding as of 10 p.m. from Haddam and Colchester. Excluding those two towns, the total vote was 22,950 for Linares to 17,643 for Needleman.

Linares, was first elected in 2012, taking the seat that had been held for the previous two decades by the late former State Sen. Eileen Daily of Westbrook. He won a second term in 2014, defeating Democrat Emily Bjornberg of Lyme on a 22,673-17,326 vote.  Needleman is serving his third term as first selectman of Essex.

Linares claimed victory around 9:30 p.m., entering the ballroom at Water Edge Resort in Westbrook to cheers from about 100 supporters. “Not bad for a close race in the 33rd, I mean how big do we have to win by,” he quipped. Linares offered special thanks to his younger brother, Ryan, who has managed his three winning election campaigns .
Needleman greeted supporters at the Ivoryton Tavern in Essex.

Old Lyme Historic District Commission Recommends BOS to Initiate Historic Survey

Following on from the Op-Ed by Gregory Stroud, the Executive Director of SECoast.org, that we published late last week, there has been some important activity on which we need to update readers.

First, as we have already reported, the Old Lyme Historic District Commission (HDC) added an item to their agenda for their regular meeting Monday morning titled, “FRA (Federal Rail Authority) Update.”

Stroud attended the meeting and reported back to us as follows, “I spoke with the Old Lyme Historic District Commission this morning. We had a friendly, productive discussion, and the board voted unanimously to recommend that the Old Lyme Board of Selectmen, at their next meeting in two weeks, initiate a new historic survey.”

A delighted Stroud commented, “An important step, and we very much appreciate the support of the HDC on this critical issue!”

Lyme-Old Lyme VFW to Distribute ‘Buddy Poppies’ at Weekend

buddy_poppiesVolunteers with the Lyme/Old Lyme Veterans of Foreign Wars (LOL VFW) Post 1467 will be distributing ‘Buddy Poppies’ during Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-5, in honor of local veterans. Donations are greatly appreciated and are used 100 percent to assist and support veterans and their families.

The ‘Buddy Poppy’ was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in August 1922. Poppy fields in Belgium were the site of some of the battles in World War I, and the overturned soils allowed the seeds to grow again in the fields and serve as a reminder of the blood shed during the war.

In the past two years, the LOL VFW has helped reunite a homeless veteran from Old Lyme to live with  his daughter in Las Vegas, paid for heating oil to help an Air Force veteran get though the winter, paid rent for an veteran who was about to become homeless, and paid for car repairs along with many other cases of assistance.

This VFW Post may be small but its reach is far — no one does more for local veterans than the VFW.
