Halloween on Lyme Street

hawthorne_rd_kids

Oh, what a night it was on Lyme Street!  There were witches and warlocks, ghosts and ghouls, aliens and … adorable little girls just like the one in the center above … and (our inside information suggests …) these ‘goblins’ in the photo all live on the same street — but it’s not Lyme Street …

The Cooley Gallery was bedecked with the biggest spider that you’ll ever see …

It seemed every house on Lyme Street had a continuous line heading towards the front door …

The Mergys outdid themselves yet again with an incredible Alice in Wonderland-themed tableau and even the appropriate movie …

Whatever was happening inside E.F. Watermelon, it was sure drawing a crowd!

The Fairfield-Sonn residence was beautifully illuminated and decorated ready for the busy night ahead. Estimates from several houses along Lyme Street were of around 800 Trick-or-Treaters by the time the evening was done …

And just look look who showed up at their door!  We’ll make no comment … other than “Great costume!”

We’ve no idea who this young man is … but his intense concentration on choosing his candy was too delightful to miss …

They came in the most fabulous costumes, with buckets and bags … and brimming with smiles!

And talking of costumes — who’s this wonderful, cuddly, little skunk?  And yes, we did say skunk!  We think it may just be Max Garvin … and his similarly-attired mom, Missy!

And who’s this delightful Dorothy?  Please do tell …

And finally, who’s this lurking in the bushes??  Oh my, let’s hope he’s history after Halloween …

Old Lyme Officially Joins Ledge Light Health District

Ledge_Light-Health_District_logoLedge Light Health District (LLHD) has announced that the Town of Old Lyme and the LLHD have put in place an Operational Agreement that formalizes their partnership, which becomes effective today, Nov. 1.  This partnership follows months of negotiations, informational sessions and a Town Meeting, at which Old Lyme residents voted to join the District.

“Ledge Light Health District is very happy to have Old Lyme on board – our staff has been working closely with the Old Lyme administration to help assure the smoothest transition possible. Although we know there will be hurdles to overcome, we are confident that we will be able to provide comprehensive public health services to the Town at a significant cost savings” said Director of Health Stephen Mansfield.

“The Town of Old Lyme is very pleased to become a member of Ledge Light Health District. As the ‘premier’ Health District in the state, we feel very lucky to have had this option, and we are already seeing benefits,” said First Selectwoman Bonnie Reemsnyder.

She continued, “Our Health Department employee will now be a Ledge Light Health District employee, but will spend a great deal of her time in our town hall, continuing to provide excellent customer service, and answer questions that our resident and business customers may have. Thanks to Director of Health Stephen Mansfield and his staff, we believe the transition will go very smoothly and everyone will see the benefits of membership.”

The policies, procedures and regulations of LLHD are currently in place, which replaced those previously in existence in the Town.  District Regulations and a current copy of the new fee schedule are available at www.llhd.org.

Editor’s Note: Ledge Light Health District (LLHD) serves as the local health department for East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, New London and Groton, Connecticut. As a health district, formed under Connecticut General Statutes Section 19a-241, LLHD is a special unit of government, allowing member municipalities to provide comprehensive public health services to residents in a more efficient manner by consolidating the services within one organization.

The Director of Health and staff of LLHD work to promote health and wellness among the 120,000 residents whom the district serves. By enforcing the Connecticut Public Health Code, conducting health education programs, monitoring disease outbreaks and nurturing our environment, LLHD is focused on promoting healthy communities.

Ledge Light Health District’s mission statement is, “to prevent disease, illness and injury; to protect and nurture our environment; and to promote improved health and prosperity for all residents,” and describes in more detail their slogan of “promoting healthy communities.”

LOL Chamber Presents ‘Entrepreneur Extraordinaire’ Anne Garland at Business Breakfast Tomorrow; All Welcome

Anne Garland will speak Nov. 2 on ‘The Entrepreneurial Woman.’

The Lyme-Old Lyme (LOL) Chamber of Commerce invites all readers — especially women — to its next Business Breakfast program on Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 7:30 to 9 a.m., when acclaimed entrepreneur Anne Garland will be the speaker in a program titled, “The Entrepreneurial Woman.”  She will  explore the visions, challenges and resources for women to make their dream a reality — while creating revenue.

This event, co-sponsored by the Town of Old Lyme, will be held in the Meeting Hall at the Old Lyme Memorial Town Hall, 52 Lyme St, Old Lyme CT.

You do not need to be a member of the LOL Chamber to attend — prospective Chamber members are encouraged to come and enjoy the presentation while also learning more about Chamber activities and how they can benefit your business. It is, however, stressed that not only are all welcome at the event regardless of your level of interest in the Chamber but also, that this is a ‘friend-raising event’ and not a fund-raising one.

Coffee and pastries will be served. To assist with planning, RSVPs by Oct. 31 to selectmansoffice@oldlyme-ct.gov would be appreciated.

Forbes magazine said in early 2016, “The Golden Age of Women Entrepreneurs has begun.” Economists and academics agree women entrepreneurs are an under-tapped resource to rekindle our economy.  More today than ever, women are looking at alternatives to the typical 9 -5 job that does not feed their souls.

Garland asks in this program, “Are you ready to unleash your dream?” and then gives sage advice on how to proceed.

With over 30 years working in sales and marketing in the corporate sector, Garland says she was a restless nine to fiver and always dreamed of having her own business to serve women in the community.  Anne (pronounced Annie) , author, speaker and Creative Director and Founder of “The Idea Circle for Women ” in Connecticut 2009, is still producing enriching, entertaining experiences that provide extraordinary women an opportunity to grow together in meaningful ways.

2015 was an award-winning year for Garland as she shifted gears and took on a position as Managing Director and started the first chapter in the state of Connecticut for the eWomenNetwork, Greater Hartford and Shoreline.  In just nine months, she broke many records including winning five chapter awards at their annual Dallas conference, the largest women’s conference in North America.
