The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) District 3A has announced that significant construction activities for the I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing (NHHC) Corridor Improvement Program will be occurring this coming weekend, Friday, July 26 to Monday, July 29, as traffic is shifted onto the new I-95 southbound lanes of The Pearl Harbor Memorial (Q) Bridge.

The weekend work is expected to cause traffic delays as construction activities take place the I-95 southbound between Woodward Avenue/Lighthouse Point (Exit 50) and the Sargent Drive (Exit 46), and the I-91 southbound connection to I-95 southbound.

The DOT has been coordinating this traffic shift with state and local public safety officials, including First Selectwoman Bonnie Reemsnyder, and implementing extensive public outreach.

Continuous updates are posted on the I-95 NHHC Corridor Improvement Program website about the construction activities leading up the traffic shift and throughout the weekend.  Visit www.i95newhaven.com for additional resources, such as videos explaining the lane and ramp closures for the weekend, detour maps and alternate routes.

Historic Ship Charles W. Morgan to be Launched at Mystic Seaport Today

The imposing Charles W. Morgan whaling ship.

Mystic Seaport will launch the National Historic Landmark vessel Charles W. Morgan in a public ceremony at the Museum’s shipyard at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21.  The day is the 172nd anniversary of the ship’s original launch in New Bedford, Mass. in 1841 and marks a significant milestone in her five-year, nearly $7 million restoration.

Ship to be Christened with Waters from Around the Globe

The ship will be christened by Sarah Bullard, the great-great-great granddaughter of Charles Waln Morgan, one of the original owners and the man after whom the vessel was named.  She will break a bottle containing water gathered from the oceans upon which the ship sailed during her 80-year whaling career, including the North and South Atlantic, the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Water from New Bedford and Mystic will be included to represent her first and current homeports.

Upon the christening, the ship will be lowered into the Mystic River in a process that will take approximately 20 minutes.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy (D-Conn.), U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.), and State Senator Andrew Maynard (D-Stonington) will participate in the ceremony.  Award-winning filmmaker Ric Burns will deliver the keynote address.

The U.S. Coast Guard Band will provide music beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Public viewing of the launch will be standing-room only in the shipyard.
