Letter to the Editor: Lanier’s Revision of Campaign Filings Raises Concerns

To the Editor:

The public deserves answers when a candidate for political office makes questionable decisions.  I think it’s only fair that we deserve an answer from Victoria Lanier regarding her inaccurate and misleading filings to the Citizen’s Clean Election Program.

Lanier’s campaign failed to show expenses towards campaign buttons, campaign flyers, campaign palm cards, campaign printing, and other miscellaneous expenses that were known to have been incurred based on evidence dating back to April.  The Citizen’s Clean Election Program was correct in questioning these expenditure omissions, and Lanier was forced to account for them.

Why were these expenditures not divulged to the Citizens’ Clean Election Program initially?  Donations of this type are illegal.  Could this be an attempt to hide costs from the State Clean Elections program to give Attorney Victoria Lanier a financial advantage in a program that caps campaign costs?

Could this be a preview of unethical behavior, or an inattention to important details that constituents will experience if Attorney Lanier is elected?  I don’t believe it’s worth it to risk on a seat currently held by someone as ethically sound as Marilyn Giuliano.  She backs Devin Carney in the Republican primary for the 23rd District and so do I.

Dear Cammy: Making Up is Hard to Do

Dear Cammy,

My friends and I got into a fight then we made up.  But now all they do is ignore me and tell me that I’m wrong.  I really need help.  What should I do?

Dear Lonely and Alone,

I’m sorry to here that you’re friends and you got into a fight.  One thing that I do know from experience is that getting over a fight is never easy.  Looking over your situation, it looks like you still have some unresolved things in your case.  Try sitting down with them and talking to them about how you feel and let them know that you are upset at what they are saying.  Let them speak and hear their feelings and thoughts over this fight.

If all is resolved go out and make memories.  I figure memories are the quickest way to bring people together.

If things are not resolved, I think that it is time to think about a new group of friends.  If people are not treating you right and making you feel bad or uncomfortable, then those people are not your friends.  I hope this helps and best of luck!

Two New Exhibitions on Show at LAA

“Bouquet with thistles” by Marilyn Caissy is featured in the Connecticut Pastel Society’s exhibition opening Friday at the LAA.

The Lyme Art Association, (LAA) presents an exhibition celebrating landscape, still life, and figurative scenes captured on canvas and in sculpture on view from Aug, 1 through Sept. 20, 2014.  The August Light: Summer Painting and Sculpture Exhibition for Members is on view in the Association’s three front galleries.

A separate juried show, Pastel Brilliance, in the Goodman Gallery highlights the talented artist-members of the Connecticut Pastel Society (CPS).
      
The Lyme Art Association is pleased once again to host the CPS in Old Lyme. Exhibition Chairwoman and CPS Signature Member, Cindy Mazzaferro explains, “The CPS is happy to once again partner with the LAA to showcase some of our most talented artists during the Pastel Brilliance exhibition.  This year, our donated demo paintings will be available through the CPS silent auction, which will end the last day of the LAA exhibition, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m.”  Bids can be placed in person or called in to the LAA at (860) 434-7802.
 
As part of the sculpture component to the exhibition, the LAA is also delighted to welcome members of the Connecticut Sculpture Society as invited guests.
 
The Lyme Art Association was founded in 1914 by the American Impressionists and continues the tradition of exhibiting and selling representational artwork by its members and invited artists, as well as offering art instruction and lectures to the community.

The Lyme Art Association is located at 90 Lyme Street, Old Lyme, CT, in a building designed by Charles Adams Platt and located within a national historic district.  Admission is free with contributions appreciated.  Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm, Sunday 1 to 5pm.

Letter to the Editor: Similarities to Giuliano Make Lanier Best Candidate to Fill Giuliano’s Shoes

For a seamless transition to elect a new State Rep in the 23rd District, Republican voters should consider the similarities between the retiring Marilyn Giuliano and Vicki Lanier when voting on August 12th.

Both are long-time Republicans with experience in elected office before running for state rep; Vicki was treasurer on Region 18 Board of Ed; Marilyn was vice chair of Old Saybrook Board of Finance.

Both are working mothers who balanced demands of parenthood, work, and volunteerism with their public service; Vicki is partner in her law firm, Marilyn is a public school employee.

Both devote time to community outreach; Vicki mentors women in need; Marilyn lent time to public health and housing. Both gave time and effort to PTO and Scouts.

In an ironic twist, both Giuliano and Lanier did not emerge with their party’s endorsement.  Twelve years ago, Marilyn won her primary.  Given the similar strengths and experience that both Vicki and Marilyn possess, please vote for Vicki Lanier on August 12th.

Letter to the Editor: Carney Has the Character to Continue Giuliano’s Work as State Rep.

Devin Carney is a great choice to be our next State Representative for the 23rd District and we will proudly vote for him in the Republican primary on August 12th.  Marilyn Giuliano has held this seat for 12 years and it is important the next person represents us with the same passion as she has.  We believe Devin is that person.

Devin is committed to the 23rd District and believes in focusing on making it possible for our families and seniors to be able to continue calling it home.  Times are tough and no one better than Devin understands, first-hand, that when times are tough it means rolling up your sleeves and getting to work. We are reminded of when he was a kid and he started a paper route to help his single mom, Deb, make ends meet.  Through hard work and against the odds, he became the first person in his immediate family to graduate college.

We believe his character, morals, and values are exactly what our district needs and he is more than ready and able to continue what Marilyn began. Please join us on August 12th in voting for Devin Carney for State Rep.
