The second-seeded Old Lyme boys step out onto the Lyme-Old Lyme High School gym floor tonight at 7 p.m. to face third-seeded Cromwell in what promises to be a grueling game, as the two teams fight for a spot in the Shoreline championship game this Friday, where their opponent will be Valley or Hyde.

Old Lyme defeated Cromwell away in the regular season but this has been a topsy-turvy year with consistently inconsistent results.

As happened for last Saturday’s game, it is anticipated the gym will be packed with Old Lyme supporters.

Kirk Kaczor’s varsity team plays in the first round of the Shoreline Tournament tonight at 7 p.m. in the newly-renovated Lyme-Old Lyme High School gym.

Led by senior captains Andrew Tyrol and George Logan, the second-ranked Wildcats meet the seventh-ranked Haddam-Killingworth Cougars for the second time this season.  The previous game ended in a win for Old Lyme, but this one will be no walk-over.

Senior George Logan and junior Danny Chapman will play critical roles in tonight's game.

H-K’s seventh seed is misleading in that, until yesterday, any one of four teams could have been in seventh place, indicating how tight the lower segment of the league ended the regular season.

The Wildcats are hoping for a large crowd of fans tonight to emphasize their home advantage.

The full draw for today’s tournament games is as follows:

No. 8 Morgan at No. 1 Valley Regional

No. 7 Haddam Killingworth at No. 2 Old Lyme

No. 6 East Hampton at No. 3 Cromwell

No. 5 Westbrook at No. 4 Hyde

Public Works and local contractors have opened the majority of the Old Lyme roadways and are widening them as close to the edges as possible.  Use caution at intersections and when exiting driveways as sight lines may be hampered by high snow piles.  Early morning drivers may experience black ice roadway conditions.

Roadway flooding is anticipated, so be aware of potential flooding conditions.  If your street is still blocked by snow or flooding, contact the Old Lyme Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Call Center at 860-598-0120 to help them track it.

Clear snow off roofs

As the rain continues, be aware that the increased weight of rain along with snow will increase the risk of structural collapse.  Clearing snow off roofs and assisting  proper drainage will help reduce the weight accumulation.

Take precautions to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning

  • Be sure to clear a path to your oil fill pipes for oil delivery, and it is important that you clear around vents from your house that are blocked by snow.  Blocked vents create a significant risk for carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Residents using generators or supplemental heating devices need to make sure they are also correctly ventilated outside of the home.
  • Do not start your car engine if the exhaust is blocked with snow.  Carbon monoxide poisoning can result.

Old Lyme Town Hall is open with full service today

Lyme School Recognized as “School of Distinction by State Dept. of Education

Region 18 Superintendent Ian Neviaser has announced that the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) recently published school lists as defined in the State’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act flexibility request (or waiver).

These lists include Turnaround, Review and Focus Schools as well as Schools of Distinction.

Neviaser said he was “proud to say,” that Lyme Consolidated School was recognized as a School of Distinction in the ‘Highest Overall Performance’ category. Schools identified as ‘Highest Overall Performance’ have School Performance Indexes (SPI) greater than the state’s “all students” target of 88 and are performing within the top 10 percent of schools across the state.

Neviaser commented, “An honor such as this is the result of a dedicated, caring, and hardworking staff who is willing to do everything in their power to ensure the success of all of their students,” adding that Lyme Consolidated had, “… proven [it was] truly one of the best.”
