Lyme-Old Lyme Food Share Garden’s Second Annual ‘Sponsor a Row’ Campaign Continues

OLD LYME—The annual Lyme-Old Lyme Food Share Garden (LOLFSG) Sponsor a Row campaign kicked off on Oct. 1, 2024. The LOLFSG is immensely grateful to individuals, families, organizations, and businesses who sponsored the garden this season. 

This year volunteers donated more than 1100 hours, gave more than 4700 pounds of food to local food pantries, installed a hoop house, and composted more than 1000 pounds of donated food waste.

The garden is also working with the Region 18 school district to renovate the middle school greenhouse. An official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be announced soon.

The annual cost to maintain a garden bed from seed through delivery is approximately $250. All money will go directly towards the operating expenses of the garden, including seeds/transplants, fertilizer, weed barrier fabric, irrigation tape, electricity, and tools. In appreciation, each $250 donation from Oct. 1, 2024 – March 31, 2025 will be recognized with a sign at the garden and on the LOLFSG website. 

Donations in any amount are also welcome.  Donations can be made at lolfoodsharegarden.org or mailed to LOL Food Share Garden Inc., PO Box 395, South Lyme, CT 06376.

Lyme Consolidated School Receives $23.7K Grant From ‘CT Grown for CT Kids’ Program

LYME–The Connecticut Department of Agriculture has announced that Lyme is among the 15 communities receiving a $23,753 grant through the ‘CT Grown for CT Kids’ program.

Lyme Consolidated School will receive the grant to support its “Waste Warriors” project. This project teaches local students about the value of composting, which allows them to reduce food waste and learn how they can recycle and support local agriculture. It also teaches them about waste management and ecosystems.

Asked her reaction to receiving the award, Allison Hine, Principal of Lyme School, told LymeLine by email, “Lyme Consolidated is excited to have received this grant award.  We will be partnering with the Town of Lyme and with Long Table Farm to support and enhance the composting and recycling initiatives of our Green Team.”

She added, “Ultimately, the project aims to enhance environmental stewardship, promote sustainability, and deepen students’ understanding of how effective waste management contributes to a healthier, more resilient community.”

State Senator Norm Needleman (D-33rd), whose District includes Lyme, commented in a press release, “Our local students learning about agriculture and the connections between our farms, our diets and our communities is very valuable as they grow.” He commented, “I’m really happy to hear that our region is getting support from the ‘CT Grown for CT Kids‘ program.”

‘CT Grown for CT Kids‘ focuses on increasing availability of locally grown foods in child nutrition programs and teaching children about the importance of nutrition and farm-to-school connections.

Lyme-Old Lyme VFW Reminds Local Veterans, Vet Families In Need to Reach Out to Them for Help

LYME/OLD LYME--Lyme-Old Lyme (LOL) VFW Post 1467 reminds all local Veterans and Veteran families in need that they can reach out to the Post to request a great variety of types of assistance.

All that is required is the Veteran’s DDForm214 Record of Military Service and a call to Services Officer, Navy Retired Captain Larry Olsen at 607-220-7137. The Services Officer will then respond, assess the need, and assist as appropriate.

Since 2012, VFW Post 1457 has been provided over 170,000 services to 134 veterans and veterans’ families In need. These services have included home repairs, medical costs, clothing needs, funeral expenses, utility, insurance & mortgage payments, and used cars with many coming discounted from All-Pro Automotive. The Post has many partners, who support the LOL “No Bar, No Building; Just Good Works” Post 1467.

Last year, the State of Connecticut VFW honored LOL Post 1467 with the accolade of ‘Best VFW in the State of Connecticut.’

State Rep. Carney Appointed House Ranking Member of New Government Oversight Committee

HARTFORD/LYME/OLD LYME – State Representative Devin Carney (R-23rd), whose Distrcit includes both Lyme and Old Lyme, was recently appointed Ranking Member of the General Assembly’s newly-created Government Oversight Committee by House Republican Leader State Representative Vincent Candelora (R-86th).

It is expected that the committee will focus on matters related to transparency in government, seek to eliminate waste and other inefficiencies, and highlight the monthly reports of state agencies released by the Connecticut State Auditors.

“I am looking forward to serving as the lead House Republican on the new Government Oversight Committee,” Rep. Carney said. “Serving on this committee will give me the opportunity to do a deep dive into government operations and finances.”

He continued, “It is essential that Connecticut’s government is efficient and doesn’t waste taxpayer dollars.  I want to thank House Minority Leader, Vin Candelora, for entrusting me with this important position and I am eager to get working for the residents of the 23rd District and the State of Connecticut.”

“Representative Devin Carney’s appointment as the House Ranking Member of this new committee underscores his dedication to good governance and accountability,” Candelora said, adding, “Devin has consistently demonstrated a commitment to transparency and ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent effectively. His experience and thoughtful leadership will be invaluable as this committee tackles the critical task of improving oversight and building trust in government operations for the people of Connecticut.”

A Ranking Member is the designated leader from the minority party on a committee. Each committee has a House and Senate ranking member. Individuals who serve in this role are responsible for bringing forward legislation and communicating to their caucuses details about bills voted out of committees.

Rep. Carney’s new assignment will take effect Wednesday, Jan. 8 at the start of the new legislative term.
