All Singers Welcome for SummerSing of Lauridsen’s ‘Lux Aeterna’

Enjoy an evening of singing next Monday, June 24, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Old Saybrook at the season’s second of six SummerSings co-sponsored by Cappella Cantorum and the Con Brio Choral Society.

Mark Singleton of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus will lead the group in an informal read-through of  “Lux Aeterna” by Morten Lauridsen, beginning with registration at 7 p.m. and singing at 7:30 p.m.  All singers are welcome.

An $8 fee includes a borrowed score for the evening if needed.

The church is located at 56 Great Hammock Rd. and is air conditioned.  Parking is available at St. Paul’s or at the Valley Shore Assembly of God at 36 Great Hammock Rd.

‘Friends of Lyme Library’ Group to Form, Inaugural Meeting Tonight

A Friends of the Lyme Public Library group is being formed under the leadership of Janis Witkins, a library board member.  The group will hold its first meeting this evening at 7 p.m. at the library on Hamburg Rd.  All are welcome.

The group is intended to support the library’s activities and foster ties between the library and the community.  Group members will work closely with the library’s director, staff and board.

The public is invited to attend the first meeting and become charter members.

A vote will take place to create the Friends group and adopt bylaws.  Officers will be elected and committees will be formed.  A treasurer will be on hand to accept membership dues.

Refreshments will be served.

Lyme-Old Lyme HS Hosts Open House for Prospective Students, March 1

On Friday, March 1, Lyme-Old Lyme High School will welcome prospective students who do not currently attend a Region 18 school and their parents to preview the Lyme-Old Lyme High School if they are considering enrolling here for the fall of 2013.

The School Counselors and Administration will be available to provide an overview of the school, its curriculum and student opportunities.  Additionally, tours of Lyme-Old Lyme High School will be available.

RSVP to 860-434-2255 by Feb. 27, if you plan to attend.

On the day of the event, arrive at 12:30 p.m. and check in at the main office before reporting to the School Counseling Department.

Essex Winter Series Opens With “Romance on the River,” Jan. 13

Opening this 35th anniversary Essex Winter Series season on Sunday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. at Valley Regional High School is a unique concert celebration of love by two local couples, each one of whom is an internationally acclaimed artists in his or her own right.

In the concert titled, “Romance on the River,” soprano Patricia Schuman and bass-baritone David Pittsinger will join forces with Essex Winter Series Artistic Director and pianist Mihae Lee and French hornist William Purvis in a recital.

This collaboration of talents in an imaginative program includes romantic works by Robert and Clara Schumann, Schubert, Copland, Dvořák, Verdi, and many more.

Music at the Meetinghouse Series Opens Jan. 20 in East Haddam

The first concert of the Music at the Meetinghouse Winter Series of 2013 at First Church of Christ, Congregational in East Haddam will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at 3 p.m. when the Caroline Doctorow Band from Long Island, N.Y. will perform.

Caroline and “The Steamrollers,” a violinist, bassist, and guitarist, enchant and entertain with music reminiscent of 60’s folk-rock acoustical sound. They are widely followed and have also played as an opening act for Grayson Hugh and Polly Messer, most recently at The Kate in Old Saybrook in early April of 2012. Energetic and soulful, this group is fun to watch, and will be a welcome respite from the short, cold days of winter.
