LYME/OLD LYME — The deadline to receive election-related letters to be considered for publication is 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, Nov. 3. Letters received before that deadline, which are selected for publication, will be published on or before midnight on Saturday, Nov. 4.
Letters received after 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, Nov. 3, will not be considered for publication, unless they are in direct response to a letter published on or after Nov. 2. The letter to which the response is being made must be cited. Response letters selected for publication will be published by midnight on Sunday, Nov. 5.
No new letters will be published on Monday, Nov. 6.

OLD LYME — It was another ‘Happy Halloween’ on Lyme Street last night and a welcome break from the rancors of the current election. The overall impression that people seemed are reporting is that the Trick or Treaters were well-behaved and overwhelmingly polite and respectful. Kudos to the parents or care-givers that raised them and … well done, kids!
These two adorable little girls were out and about on the hunt for treats. Mermaid Cecilia Girasoli (right) was certainly happy to see her pre-K classmate, Fairy Lilly, on Halloween Night!

LYME-OLD LYME — The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Lyme-Old Lyme Post 1467 has been recognized for outstanding contributions made by its members that has resulted in the Post being named a member of the 2022-2023 All-American VFW team.
The All-American program exists to recognize exceptional leadership and teamwork, authentic accomplishments in membership growth and VFW core programs.
There are 88 VFW Posts in Connecticut and only seven have achieved this national VFW recognition.
Since 2015 there have been over 120 instances where the Lyme-Old Lyme VFW Post 1467 has provided needy veterans and their families with one-time temporary assistance services totaling over $150,000. Since the spring of 2023, Post 1467 helped over 10 veterans to spend over $11,000 to address a variety of issues, including homelessness.
The Lyme-Old Lyme Post 1467 holds its annual dinner dance this Saturday, Oct. 28, with the theme, We Still Serve.

OLD LYME — Joan S. “Joanie” Bonvicin passed away at her home surrounded by her family Oct. 16, 2023, after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 1, 1939, in New London to Ellsworth “Babe” Green and his wife Kathryn “Kitty.”
She leaves behind her husband Louis “Lou;” her son Rick and his wife Debbie; daughter Suzi McCormack and her husband Tom; and greatly loved grandchildren. Bailey Steele and his wife Lauren and Kristen Steele. She is also survived by her brother Donnie and his wife Cindy; and much-loved nieces, Melissa Seckla, her husband Tim and children, Maddie and Chris, and Heather Green, her fiancée Tommy and her daughter Delana. She was sadly predeceased by her brother Larry Green.
After working as a legal secretary, then for the Building and Zoning Inspectors of Old Lyme, she realized her true place and calling when she became the secretary for the Middle School of Lyme-Old Lyme. She was beloved and treasured by all the students and parents who met her and were greeted by her smile and experienced her kindness. Her love of holidays and candy dishes was legendary. Parents gave her notes and lunches for delivery. Students who had forgotten field trip or lunch money were always given what they needed by “Mrs. Bonvicin.” As the face and the heart of the Middle School, her reach was wide; she formed treasured friendships with custodians, teachers and other administrative folks which lasted beyond her reluctant retirement after 44 years.
Her next adventure brought her to the Lymes’ Senior Center as a volunteer for whatever needed to be done including one of her strengths: writing and sending birthday cards. She never forgot a birthday and always sent cards. More friendships were formed at the Senior Center, although she never stopped missing the Middle School and the kids.
A celebration of her life will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday Oct. 26, at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, 2 Ferry Road. A reception will follow in the adjacent fellowship hall. Please visit www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com for tributes and directions.
