OLD LYME — Norman Misheloff was born Aug. 26, 1925, in New Haven. He died Jan. 11, 2024. Norman was the only child of Herman and Ada Misheloff and husband to the late Lillian Collins, whom he was married to for many years.
In his senior year of high school, Norman answered the call to serve his country in World War II by joining the United States Army. There, he flew as a radio-operator-mechanic and gunner on a B24 bomber. Norman later joined the Army Reserves, serving our country for an additional 16 years …

Jeff Duigou (R) is a candidate for Connecticut’s 33rd Senate District
COLCHESTER/LYME — Citing the need for “fresh, family-focused ideas” in the Connecticut legislature, Colchester’s Jeff Duigou announced yesterday that he is running to be the next Connecticut Senator from the 33rd District.
The 33rd District includes Lyme along with Chester, Clinton, Colchester, Deep River, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Portland, Westbrook and part of Old Saybrook.
“From groceries to gasoline, Connecticut remains unaffordable for working and middle class families as well as for seniors and small business owners,” Duigou said.“
He continued, “As State Senator, I will work with Democrats and Republicans to lower those tax burdens. I will also work to pass laws which make our communities safer. We need to better support our law enforcement officials and first responders. As state senator, I will put you, the taxpayers, first. Your voices will be listened to.”
Noting, “I will bring a law-and-order, business-friendly, pro-environment perspective to the State Capitol, adding, “As a conservationist, I believe we should be good stewards of the abundant natural resources we enjoy here in Connecticut,”
Duigou stated, “I will be a voice for sustainability, preservation. and public health. At the same time, I understand that innovation, research, trades, and small businesses are the backbone of our economy.”
A Republican, Duigou worked for more than 30 years in the environmental engineering field and retired from his Vice President of Environmental Sciences position at Eagle Environmental, Inc.
For 18 years, he served as a Licensed Environmental Professional, helping clients with compliance with federal and state environmental regulations and for 15 years, Duigou worked with multiple school districts to help provide safety services to administrators, teachers and maintenance staff.
Duigou concluded,. “From affordability to public safety to wasteful government spending, there are so many areas where we can improve our state’s policies.”
A graduate of the University of Connecticut, Duigou and his wife Cari have lived in Colchester for the past 38 years and have raised their family there.

UPDATED 1/17 with full obituary: Gretchen M. Stanland met the Lord on Saturday, January 13th.
She was born August 4, 1938, in New Britain, the daughter of Helen and Clement Marsh. Gretchen grew up and stayed in New Britain, graduating from New Britain high-school in 1956 along with her predeceased husband, Andrew Stanland. In Boston, she gained her Bachelor of Arts from Simmons College and continued on to receive her Master’s Degree from Central Connecticut State University. Her first job was teaching second grade students. Being an English teacher brought her great joy, yet she soon found her true calling – ministry. After growing up attending services at the South Church in New Britain, she decided to attend Yale Divinity School and was ordained. She always felt fortunate doing God’s work, and found serving at the Somersville Congregational Church, as well as the South Lyme Chapel, in Old Lyme, as open and enriching. Gretchen even brought together a community in Donkwe Donkwe, Zimbabwe, traveling there in 1990, along with members of her Somersville congregation.
She raised three children; David, Eric & Elizabeth, the last predeceasing her, as well as lovingly raising two granddaughters, Brianna & Noelle, whom she loved as her own. Once Gretchen retired from ministry, she settled back into her home in Old Lyme, and married her now deceased husband, Michael Tucchio.
She loved her life, her family, her church, and her husbands, and was grateful for all that she had.
Gretchen is survived by the above mentioned, as well as: sister Betty Russell; daughters-in-law Carol and Kim; grandchildren Wyatt, Lyla, Jared, McKenzie, Jordan & Kolyn; and nephews Robert & Marc. She encountered and embraced many other loved ones she met along her way.
The memorial calling hours will be held Saturday, January 20th at 3 p.m., at the Old Lyme Congregational Church, followed by a service at 4 p.m.
In lieu of gifts or flowers, Gretchen requested that donations be made to the Homeless Hospitality Center of New London or Southern Poverty Law Center.

NEW LONDON/OLD LYME – Richard Sapia, 60, died unexpectedly in New London, where he lived, Jan. 5, 2024. Richard was born in Wethersfield, April 27, 1963, the seventh of nine children. The family moved to Old Lyme in 1979, where he attended school and graduated from Old Lyme High School.
