Death Announced of David “Dave” Harold Berggren, 86, of Old Lyme, “a Fixture in the Old Lyme Community”

OLD LYME—The world lost a great man Feb. 1, 2024, when David “Dave” Harold Berggren, 86, of Old Lyme, passed away. Dave was born in Hartford, Oct. 23, 1937, to Hilma (Mimi) Larson Berggren and Harold (Poppy) Berggren.

Dave grew up and attended school in Old Lyme, and after graduation, joined the Merchant Marines. Dave returned home and spent his life as an incredibly talented craftsman …

… Dave was a fixture in the Old Lyme community, even continuing to fight to the end for his beloved Black Hall pond and home, which are being destroyed by beavers.

Dave is survived by his sister Linda Marsh (Ted Marsh); his son David Berggren Jr.; his grandson Hayden Berggren; his great-granddaughter Leynea Berggren; nephew Geoffrey Marsh; and his nieces, Christina Underwood and Kimberly Cappello. Dave is lovingly remembered by Lee Detwiler, who Dave always said was the daughter he never had; and Sam Detwiler, who considered Dave his grandfather.

Dave will be missed by all who visited Camp David, drank beer and listened to his epic stories of a life well lived.

Funding for Lymes’ Senior Center Discussed at Old Lyme Special Town Meeting, Referendum on Funding Planned for May 7

OLD LYME —This evening, Tuesday, April 30, at 7 p.m., the Old Lyme Board of Selectmen will host a Special Town Meeting in the Memorial Town Hall Meeting Room.

According to Old Lyme First Selectwoman Martha Shoemaker’s newsletter sent out Friday, April 26, “The purpose of this meeting is to learn more about the resolution for [the Lymes’] Senior Center funding.”

She continues, “Last year, we approved a resolution that had some. conflicting language. This resolution corrects that and includes the additional funding that we approved on April 15.”

The resolution in question will be moved to a paper ballot referendum , which will take place Tuesday, May 7, from 12 to 8 p.m. at the Lyme-Old Lyme (LOL) Middle School.  

May 7 is the same day that a referendum on the Lyme-Old Lyme (LOL) Schools 2024-25 budget of $36,920,881 will be held. That referendum will also be held by paper ballot, from 12 to 8 p.m. at the LOL Middle School for Old Lyme residents.

Lyme residents will cast their votes on the LOL Schools budget on Tuesday, May 7, from 12 to 8 p.m. at Lyme Town Hall.

Old Lyme Board of Selectmen to Hold Special Meeting to Discuss, Take Action on Tantummaheag Access ‘Memo of Understanding’

OLD LYME — The Old Lyme Board of Selectmen has scheduled a Special Meeting on Monday, April 29, at 5:30 p.m. in the Memorial Town Hall Meeting Room.

The agenda is focused exclusively on the draft Memorandum of Understanding between the Town of Old Lyme and George Frampton/Carla D’Arista concerning Tantummaheag Landing. Death Announced of Harry Steven Plaut of Old Lyme, Former Harbor Master for OL

OLD LYME–Harry Steven Plaut, of Old Lyme, known to his family and friends as “Har”or “HP,” passed away on Friday, April 19, 2024, just after his 72nd birthday.

Harry was born in Hartford, the son of Elaine Sayadoff of Bloomfield and the late Michael J. Plaut. He is also survived by his son, Alexander Plaut of Shelton; his sister, Laurie Shakun and her husband Marshall … and his beloved rescued Pit Bull, Casey Plaut …

… he served his shoreline communities after graduating from Harbor Master School in 2015, as both Harbor Master for Old Lyme for nine years and Westbrook for five years … Harry was also a long-time member of the OLRTC club …

His affection for spending time with his friends, playing cards, bonfire cookouts, and yelling “Casey get back in the office,” while holding hot tea in his hand, will be remembered for years to come. Harry left a lasting impression on everyone he met …

His service will be private …
