Lyme Art Association Hosts Three New Shows Through July 18

Diane Holtzworth’s “Dance of the River and Sky” in pastel is one of the signature paintings in the Lyme Art Association’s member artists ‘Expanding Visions‘ show.

OLD LYME–The Lyme Art Association (LAA) is currently hosting three new shows, which are on view through July 18.

Featuring the work of LAA’s member artists, Expanding Visions includes everything from hyper-realism to abstract works in a memorable exhibition.

Running concurrently is the Hudson Valley Art Association’s 91st Annual Juried Exhibition.

Finally, celebrate the creativity of young artists with Hope Is the Thing with Feathers, a show that is inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem of the same name.

The LAA offers workshops for painters of all levels. June’s workshop offerings include Steven Assael teaching portrait painting June 27-30; and Howard Park & Lisa Miceli lead Oil & Watercolor Plein Air on June 29-30. Founded in 1914 by the American Impressionists, the Lyme Art Association continues the tradition of exhibiting and selling representational artwork, as well as offering art instruction, lectures, and other community programs.

The LAA is located at 90 Lyme Street in Old Lyme, CT, in an iconic 1921 building designed by renowned architect Charles Adams Platt and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Admission is free. Hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-5pm.

Cote Will Lead Mystic, Niantic and Old Lyme Brokerages

Beth Cote will serve as Brokerage Manager for all three of the firm’s New London County, Conn., offices, located in Mystic, Niantic and Old Lyme.

NEW LONDON COUNTY, CT — On June 10, William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty announced that Old Lyme resident Beth Cote will serve as Brokerage Manager for all three of the firm’s New London County, Conn., offices, located in Mystic, Niantic and Old Lyme.

The move comes as the company reaches number one market share by dollar volume for all property types sold.

Cote brings nearly 30 years of residential real estate sales expertise with in-depth knowledge of the Connecticut Shoreline markets. In her prior experience as a sales associate, she consistently ranked among the top-producing agents at William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty.

Cote is taking on the leadership role during a period of strong growth for the company in New London County. According to SmartMLS, for all property types sold year to date in 2024, the company has achieved average property sale prices 35% higher than its competitors.

Her transition into the brokerage manager position in New London County began with her appointment to lead the Old Lyme and Niantic offices earlier in 2024, followed by Mystic.

She also possesses a strong background in marketing and management information systems, and is well-versed in the technology side of real estate, with proficiency in social media and digital platform advertising. 

Old Lyme VNA Announces New Locations for Nurse Office Hours

OLD LYME—The Old Lyme Town Nurse Denise Piersa’s office locations have changed as of June 1.  The new locations are as follows:

  • Old Lyme Town Hall (Mondays)
  • Christ the King Church in Old Lyme (Tuesdays-Thursdays)
  • Lyme Public Library (Fridays)

Town Nurse office hours are unchanged at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Town Nurse appointments are open to residents of Lyme, Old Lyme and South Lyme free of charge. Walk-ins are welcome, but residents are encouraged to call ahead of time.

The Town Nurse’s phone number is 860-434-7808.

Death Announced of Anne Scheel of Lyme, Wife of Robert, Mother of Kirk and Craig—All of Lyme

LYME, CT-—Devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Sibling and Friend. Anne (Cushing) Scheel, a remarkable woman with an unforgettable smile, passed away surrounded by her loving family May 23, 2024, at the age of 63. Anne was born March 28, 1961, in Salem, Mass., to James and Phyllis Cushing and grew up in Waterford …

Anne was predeceased by her father, James Cushing, in 2021. The family is certain he was waiting with open arms to welcome his beloved daughter to heaven. She is survived by her husband Robert Scheel; sons, Kirk Scheel (Caroline) and Craig Scheel (Amy), both of Lyme; mother, Phyllis Cushing of Waterford; siblings, Richard Cushing (Jan) of Niantic, Paul Cushing (Karen) of Waterford, Chris Cushing of Old Lyme, and Julie Wilson (John) of Niantic ….

Her immediate family will pay their final respects to Anne in a private service …

Suisman Shapiro Atty. Zrenda of Old Lyme Secures $1.5 Million Settlement for Injured Motorcyclist

NEW LONDON/OLD LYME—Atty. Kyle Zrenda, who is an Old Lyme resident, recently attained a $1,500,000 settlement for a motorcyclist injured in a collision with an SUV in Stonington.

Atty. Zrenda is a director on the civil litigation team of Suisman Shapiro Attorneys at Law of New London. He practices in the areas of personal injury, medical malpractice, tribal law, and insurance law.

Atty. Zrenda’s client was coming home from a Fourth of July barbeque when the driver of an SUV failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign, colliding with the motorcycle. The motorcyclist had 10 surgeries under general anesthesia.

The other driver’s insurance carrier attempted to blame the motorcyclist for the collision, claiming that he had been speeding and was not wearing appropriate reflective clothing.

Atty. Zrenda put forward evidence from an expert in accident reconstruction to counter these arguments, convincing the insurance company that it should not risk a trial, avoiding months, if not years, of litigation, while still securing the compensation to which his client was entitled under the law. 

Atty. Zrenda was admitted to the New York Bar in 2013, and the Connecticut Bar in 2014. He is also admitted to practice in Federal District Courts for the District of Connecticut, as well as those for the Southern, Eastern, and Northern Districts  of New York.

In 2021, Atty. Zrenda was admitted to practice before the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Court and the Mohegan Gaming Disputes Court. Since 2017, Atty. Zrenda has been recognized by Super Lawyers ® as a “Rising Star” in the area of personal injury law—no more than 2.5 percent of attorneys in each state are chosen for this honor.

He has also been recognized by U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Lawyers in America—“Ones to Watch” since 2021.
