Old Lyme Basketball Boys are Shoreline Champions!

MADISON, CT—On Tuesday evening, Feb. 25, the Lyme-Old Lyme boys’ basketball team won the Shoreline Championship defeating East Hampton 59-55.

Old Lyme sophomore Eddie Fiske, Jr. (#34) scored a game-high 24 points for the Wildcats.

Sophomore Eddie Fiske scored a game-high 24 points for the Wildcats while junior Colman Curtiss-Reardon added 17—Oliver Wyman notched 11 points for Old Lyme.

Old Lyme junior Colman Curtiss-Reardon advances down the court in Tuesday’s Shoreline Championship game against East Hampton. He netted 17 points in the game.

Brady Lynch was top scorer for the Bellringers with 17 points with Austin Cuthbertsin adding 12—Bryson Milton scored 10 points.

Old Lyme’s Brady Sheffield was named Shoreline Conference “Coach of the Year” before the game began.

Old Lyme, who are the reigning state champions, will compete next in the CIAC Division V State Tournament entering as the #3 seed. Their opponent, the date, and location of their first game is yet to be announced.

Prior to the start of the game, this season’s Shoreline All-Conference selections were announced. Lyme-Old Lyme honors were as follows:

  • Brady Sheffield – Shoreline Conference “Coach of the Year”
  • Eddie Fiske Jr. – Shoreline Conference “Player of the Year” and “1st Team All Conference”.
  • Colman Curtiss-Reardon – Second Team All Conference
  • Ryan Hill – All Conference Honorable Mention

Breaking News: Thursday’s Zoning Meeting Postponed at First Selectwoman, Applicant’s Request

OLD LYME— UPDATED 6:10 p.m. with details of letter sent requesting postponement of meeting.

The Old Lyme (OL) Zoning Commission meeting scheduled for Thursday has been postponed at the applicant’s request.

Today, Old Lyme First Selectwoman Martha Shoemaker sent a letter to Paul Orzel, Chairman of the OL Zoning Commission, saying, “The Halls Road Improvement Committee and I acknowledge that the Zoning Commission has received many additional exhibits and request additional time to review them. We would like to request to postpone the meeting of February 27, 2025, until late March 2025. This will provide the committee with additional time to review the exhibits.”

The letter was copied to Eric Knapp, Old Lyme Land Use Coordinator; Edie Twining, Chair of the Halls Road Improvement Committee, and William R. Sweeney, Attorney for the Halls Road project.

Lyme Ambulance Association Welcomes Two New EMRs, Conniff and Liggett

LYME—Lyme Ambulance Association (LAA) has welcomed two new Emergency Medical Responders (EMR). The two new EMR’s are Richard (Dick) Conniff and Geoff Liggett.

A press release issued by the LAA states, “We’re thrilled to introduce two outstanding additions to our team of dedicated volunteers. These individuals embody the spirit of community service that makes Lyme so special.”

Conniff is a globe-trotting writer for National Geographic and author of numerous books, Conniff, who resides in Lyme with his wife Karen, has chosen to root himself deeper in the Lyme community. With a wealth of experiences and a passion for public health, he is now serving his neighbors.

After a successful career in fundraising for educational institutions, Liggett has found the perfect balance between an active retirement and giving back. A local resident with his partner Christine, Liggett brings enthusiasm and a love for outdoor activities to the LAA team.

The LAA leaders remind LymeLine readers that EMRs and EMTs come from all walks of life, united by their desire to help others. No prior medical experience is needed – just a willingness to learn and serve.

Lyme Ambulance Association provides all the necessary training to become an EMR or EMT.

SECWAC Presents Acclaimed Journalist Edward Wong, Speaking on His Family’s Reckoning with China, Wednesday; Free Event at RJ Julia’s in Madison

MADISON, CT— On Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m., the Southeast Connecticut World Affairs Council (SECWAC) hosts award-winning journalist and author Edward Wong at RJ Julia Booksellers in Madison, Conn. Wong’s talk is titled, ‘At the Edge of Empire: A Family’s Reckoning with China,’ and is an epic story of modern China that weaves a family memoir with vital reporting by a diplomatic correspondent for The New York Times.

In his new book, Wong describes his father’s years posted along China’s frontiers when he was a soldier in the Chinese army under Mao; and his own journey charting China’s acceleration into hard authoritarian rule under Xi Jinping, the current leader. Those dual narratives give us insight into the direction of China and US-China ties, the most consequential relationship of the 21st century. 

At the Edge of Empire was chosen by The Washington Post as one of the best non-fiction books of 2024 and has been featured on CNN, MSNBC, PBS, NPR and BBC, and in The New York Times.

Wong reports on diplomacy and foreign policy for The New York Times from Washington, DC. He has worked for the Times for more than 25 years, 13 of those as a correspondent and bureau chief in Iraq and China. He received a Livingston Award for his coverage of the Iraq War and was on a team of Pulitzer Prize finalists. He was awarded the Edward Weintal Prize from Georgetown University for diplomatic reporting and received an honorary doctorate from Middlebury Language Schools after the publication of his book.

Wong has reported from a cruise in North Korea, a walk through the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan, and the final trans-Atlantic flight of the Concorde. He often travels with the U.S. Secretary of State to cover diplomatic trips.

He has been a Nieman Fellow at Harvard and done fellowships at the Belfer Center of Harvard Kennedy School and the Wilson Center in Washington.

He has taught international reporting as a visiting professor at Princeton and at the University of California at Berkeley, where he serves on the advisory board of the graduate school of journalism.

Wong graduated from the University of Virginia and has joint master’s degrees from U.C. Berkeley.
