Lyme Land Trust Hosts Native Plant Sale

LYME— April is Native Plant Month!

On Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, the Lyme Land Trust will be selling more than 30 different species of native plants, including flowering pollinator plants and grasses grown at Judges Farm in Old Lyme.

Mike Baczewski, from New England Pollinator Gardens, will be on hand to answer questions and offer tips on how to best grow these local wonders.

Plants are available in 3.5″ pots for just $3 each; cash, check or credit cards accepted.

Join the Lyme Land Trust at the Lyme Land Trust Conservation Center, 12-1 Town St. in Lyme, just north of the Hadlyme Country Market.

Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center in Old Lyme Hosts Family Day, April 26

OLD LYME – The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center will host an afternoon of fun and discovery at its annual Family Day on Saturday, April 26. 

The event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the center, 100 Lyme St. 

Activities include science experiments, nature building, games, crafts, and plein-air painting along the Lieutenant River. Local band Sunny Train will perform at 3 p.m. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be available for purchase through the Lyme-Old Lyme Lions Club. 

Admission is $10 per family. Registration is recommended but not required. Families can register online in advance or pay at the door on the day of the event.

The Estuary Center dedicates itself to future generations through experiential education and conservation of the land, waters, and the species that inhabit them. Established in 2015 as a regional center of the Connecticut Audubon Society, the center focuses on protecting and conserving the dominant biosystems of southeastern Connecticut.

Old Lyme Residents Invited to Join ‘Two Lights for Tomorrow’ by Shining Two Lights in Their Window, April 19

OLD LYME — Old Lyme is participating in a national recognition called Two Lights for Tomorrow. State and municipal buildings, businesses, organizations, and homes across the US will be shining two lights in their evening windows as a nod to “One if by Land, Two if by Sea.” 

The commemoration also signifies a unifying call to action for our citizens to celebrate and serve.

The Town of Old Lyme’s America 250 Committee is suggesting to those who can to shine two lights —any two lights, perhaps two window candles from the holidays, or even your two outdoor entry lights—in the window of their home or building the evening of Friday, April 18, for however long they choose. The Committee is also suggesting to all to post to social media a photo of your window with two lights with the tag #townofoldlyme – and plans to create a digital photo album of wide participation in Old Lyme.

“Two Lights for Tomorrow” commemorates the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s famous ride. Two lights in Boston’s North Church steeple meant the British were coming via sea. The Battles at Lexington and Concord following the British arrival marks the beginning of America’s Revolutionary War.

It is said that about 100 of our local men (with 63 names officially recorded) marched to Lexington after word arrived here that militia back up and “fresh horses” were needed after eight patriots were killed and nine injured in the initial fighting on the Lexington Green.

Girls’ Lacrosse

On Tuesday, April 8, Lyme-Old Lyme High School Girls Lacrosse opened the season against Morgan at home. Old Lyme won 13-5 and is 1-0 on the season.

Goal-scorers for Old Lyme were Sadie Lukasiewski with four goals, Anna Bussman with three goals, and Elise Marchant with two.

Goal-scorers with assists were Anne-Marie Hinckley with one goal and one assist, and Jill Kleefeld with three goals and one assist.

Assists were made by Allie Krol, Kanon Oharu and Maddie Trepanier with one assist apiece.

Avery Spooner made three saves in goal for the Wildcats.

Girls’ Tennis

On Tuesday, April 8, Old Lyme lost 5-2 to Valley Regional High School. Old Lyme wins came from the #1 singles match with Katherine Zhang soundly defeating her opponent Sophia Bonannoi 6-1, 6-0 and the #3 doubles team of Katie Ferman and Ainsley Rinoski. They defeated Charlotte Kolb and Sydney Liggett 6-2, 6-4.

Boys’ Tennis

On Tuesday, April 8, Old Lyme defeated Valley Regional High School 6-1.

On a cold windy day to open the season after a rainout on Monday, the Wildcats defeated the Valley Regional Warriors in Old Lyme. Senior Captain Andy Sicuranza handled a back-and-forth match from Eddie Johnson, while his fellow Senior Captain, Micah Bass barely came out with a win over Freshman phenom Myles Garrity of Valley, defeating him in a 3rd set tiebreaker.

Garrity demonstrated the composure of a senior in just his first official high school match, taking Micah Bass, former Doubles Champion (2023), to three sets.

Old Lyme’s third captain, Senior, Rowan Hovey was handed Old Lyme’s only loss on the day, while Junior Oliver Wyman handled Valley’s, Samphel in two sets. 

Old Lyme swept doubles, with their own freshman phenom, Gavin Gray, pairing up with Junior and 2nd Team All-Conference player from last year, Chris Dagher to start this season.

Ryan Olsen and Ryan Miller took a win at #2 doubles, while James Dahlke and John Turick were handed a win due to forfeit at #3 doubles.

The Wildcats will look to get back to the top this season after falling short in second place to Westbrook last season.

Death Announced of Samuel “Sam” Meredith Strong III, Founder of ‘The Strong Agency’ in Old Lyme, Essex

Samuel “Sam” Meredith Strong III of Easton, Maryland, passed away on April 4 due to complications from dementia. He was 90 years old.

Sam was born March 2, 1935, in Bayside, New York, to Helen Pettit Strong and Samuel Meredith Strong, Jr. When he was eleven years old, his mother married Herbert (Lindy) Lindholm, who became his loving Dad …

Sam met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Cookie) Riggs, while he was still at Colgate. They were married in February, 1957 …

… In 1968, Sam left Reynolds to start his own real estate firm in Old Lyme and Essex, Connecticut. The Strong Agency specialized in high-end properties in the Lower Connecticut River Valley. Sam served as President of the local MLS board and was a trustee of the Lyme Art Academy. He also served as Greens Chairman on the board of Black Hall Club and as a board member of Old Lyme Country Club …

Sam is survived by his wife Cookie, his children, Elizabeth Strong Baker and her husband Larry, Sam IV, his grandchildren … and by six great-grandchildren …
