Vote Today! New Polling Place for Lyme Voters

Election Day is finally here.  Voting takes place today for Old Lyme voters at the Cross Lane Firehouse and for Lyme voters at the Lyme Town Hall, 480 Hamburg Rd., from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

There are no town elections this year and State Representative Devin Carney (R-23rd), whose district includes both Old Lyme and Lyme, is uncontested on this occasion.

Lyme and Old Lyme fall under different State Senate districts.  Lyme voters will choose between two-term incumbent Art Linares (R) and challengers Essex First Selectman Norm Needleman (D) and Colin Bennet (Green) for the 33rd State Senate District.

Meanwhile, Old Lyme voters will decide between one-term incumbent Paul Formica (R) and challenger Ryan Henowitz (D) for the 20th State Senate District

Old Lyme Historic District Commission Recommends BOS to Initiate Historic Survey

Following on from the Op-Ed by Gregory Stroud, the Executive Director of SECoast.org, that we published late last week, there has been some important activity on which we need to update readers.

First, as we have already reported, the Old Lyme Historic District Commission (HDC) added an item to their agenda for their regular meeting Monday morning titled, “FRA (Federal Rail Authority) Update.”

Stroud attended the meeting and reported back to us as follows, “I spoke with the Old Lyme Historic District Commission this morning. We had a friendly, productive discussion, and the board voted unanimously to recommend that the Old Lyme Board of Selectmen, at their next meeting in two weeks, initiate a new historic survey.”

A delighted Stroud commented, “An important step, and we very much appreciate the support of the HDC on this critical issue!”

Lyme-Old Lyme VFW to Distribute ‘Buddy Poppies’ at Weekend

buddy_poppiesVolunteers with the Lyme/Old Lyme Veterans of Foreign Wars (LOL VFW) Post 1467 will be distributing ‘Buddy Poppies’ during Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-5, in honor of local veterans. Donations are greatly appreciated and are used 100 percent to assist and support veterans and their families.

The ‘Buddy Poppy’ was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in August 1922. Poppy fields in Belgium were the site of some of the battles in World War I, and the overturned soils allowed the seeds to grow again in the fields and serve as a reminder of the blood shed during the war.

In the past two years, the LOL VFW has helped reunite a homeless veteran from Old Lyme to live with  his daughter in Las Vegas, paid for heating oil to help an Air Force veteran get though the winter, paid rent for an veteran who was about to become homeless, and paid for car repairs along with many other cases of assistance.

This VFW Post may be small but its reach is far — no one does more for local veterans than the VFW.

Champions! Paul Gleason’s girls won their fourth consecutive Shoreline Conference championship Friday night at Portland High School.

The Lyme-Old Lyme High School girl’s soccer team shattered a Shoreline Conference record this evening when they defeated North Branford 1-0 to win their fourth consecutive championship.  Wildcat Mya Johnson scored about five minutes into the second half and the goal stood unanswered until the final whistle.

This win places the Wildcats in the Shoreline Conference history books as four consecutive wins by the same team has never before been achieved.

The ‘Cats went into the final as top seeds while the Thunderbirds came in at number six after defeating second seeds Cromwell in their semifinal.

Bushnell Farm Offers ‘Election Day Cake,’ Cider, Harvest Activities at Free Event Today

Bushnell Farm, the 22 acre, 17th century site in Old Saybrook will be open on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. with autumn activities that reflect the seasonal rhythm of daily life at this Valley-Shore farmstead. The event at 1445 Boston Post Rd. is free and open to the public with on-site parking. 

To celebrate the end of this campaign year, there will be Election Day cake in the oven of the 1678 farm house and demonstrators will be pressing apples for cider outside. Visitors can hear about the vast differences between Connecticut elections in colonial times and today.

The Bushnell family would be busy processing their apples, corn, vegetables and butchered beef into stores that could be preserved for the winter, so there will be several examples of food preservation taking place. The weaver in the Loom House will be working as will the blacksmith in the Forge.

Visitors can take a wagon ride around the Farm and stop near the Grove that is home to an Indian wigwam and there will be opportunities to compare and contrast their fall preparations with those of their English neighbors. 

Bushnell Farm is owned by Herb and Sherry Clark of Essex and is open to the public for seasonal events. The site is used for school programs, Scout campouts and for the Connecticut River Museum’s Summer Camp.
