Letter to the Editor: Re-elect ‘Invaluable’ Mary Powell St. Louis to Region 18 BOE for Lyme, She Offers ‘Executive, Medical, Family, Lyme Community’ Experience

To the Editor:

As an unaffiliated voter, I take a lot of time to research each candidate I vote for. Although time consuming, this research fine-tunes my critical thinking so I come out with a solid decision. I do not take any cues from our national political parties.

I have spent countless hours researching the two candidates for election to one of Lyme seats on the Region 18 Board of Education. The hands-down winner is Mary Powell St. Louis.

Mary is able to hold sincere views on complex issues. Her views are nuanced and well thought out, and the result of many years of executive, medical, family, and Lyme community experiences. I am so grateful that she has committed 8 years to the Board of Education so far. Our Board of Education volunteers devote countless hours to guide our students, faculty, parents, staff, and community. They need to think through difficult topics such as spending priorities, student needs, and strategic planning. She has the unbounding energy and enthusiasm to serve at least 4 more.

When she’s not on our local ballot, she serves as one of our Deputy Registrar of Voters. She volunteers as a Master Gardener to beautify our town, as the treasurer for our Boy Scout Troop 26, and she checks in with her neighbors, offering a hand wherever she is needed. She has raised three well-adjusted nearly-grown boys, knowing all three levels of our school district (elementary, middle, and high school) from the inside out.

She holds down a full-time executive job, is a Medical Doctor, holds an MBA, and a Masters in Public Health. She sits in on town commission meetings regularly. She has known what happens in this town for decades. She knows the personalities and the politics. She is invaluable as our representative on the Board of Education.

The previous time the Town of Lyme voted for Mary was 2019 when she ran for her second term on the Board of Education. If you think about what our lives were like in 2019, compare them to 2023, you have to give Mary so much credit for staying the course at all times, for being that steady hand, and continuing to serve our children so well through thick and thin.

Mary for BOE Region 18 Lyme!

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Farrell,
Lyme, CT.

Death Announced of Joan S. “Joanie” Bonvicin of Old Lyme, Beloved ‘Face and Heart’ of LOL Middle School for 44 Years

Joan S. “Joanie” Bonvicin

OLD LYME — Joan S. “Joanie” Bonvicin passed away at her home surrounded by her family Oct. 16, 2023, after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 1, 1939, in New London to Ellsworth “Babe” Green and his wife Kathryn “Kitty.”

She leaves behind her husband Louis “Lou;” her son Rick and his wife Debbie; daughter Suzi McCormack and her husband Tom; and greatly loved grandchildren. Bailey Steele and his wife Lauren and Kristen Steele. She is also survived by her brother Donnie and his wife Cindy; and much-loved nieces, Melissa Seckla, her husband Tim and children, Maddie and Chris, and Heather Green, her fiancée Tommy and her daughter Delana. She was sadly predeceased by her brother Larry Green.

After working as a legal secretary, then for the Building and Zoning Inspectors of Old Lyme, she realized her true place and calling when she became the secretary for the Middle School of Lyme-Old Lyme. She was beloved and treasured by all the students and parents who met her and were greeted by her smile and experienced her kindness. Her love of holidays and candy dishes was legendary. Parents gave her notes and lunches for delivery. Students who had forgotten field trip or lunch money were always given what they needed by “Mrs. Bonvicin.” As the face and the heart of the Middle School, her reach was wide; she formed treasured friendships with custodians, teachers and other administrative folks which lasted beyond her reluctant retirement after 44 years.

Her next adventure brought her to the Lymes’ Senior Center as a volunteer for whatever needed to be done including one of her strengths: writing and sending birthday cards. She never forgot a birthday and always sent cards. More friendships were formed at the Senior Center, although she never stopped missing the Middle School and the kids.

A celebration of her life will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday Oct. 26, at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, 2 Ferry Road. A reception will follow in the adjacent fellowship hall. Please visit www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com for tributes and directions.

A scholarship is being established in her name for students exhibiting her character and qualities, and donations may be made to the “Mrs. Bonvicin (Joanie) Scholarship Fund” on GoFundMe.com (https://gofund.me/49f5d96e).

Letter to the Editor: Old Lyme Planning Chair Supports Incumbents Gaudio, Willis to Continue in Their Roles, Both are “Great Assets” to Commission

To the Editor:

The Old Lyme November 7th ballot includes voting for two incumbent members of the Planning Commission.  Barbara Gaudio (U) has lived in Old Lyme for three decades and brings to the Commission business experience, including experience with commercial real estate.  Donald Willis (R) is a 4th generation resident of Old Lyme and has extensive construction experience, including being a senior bridge inspector prior to his retirement from the CT DOT.  Combined, they have approximately fifteen years of experience as members of the Planning Commission.

Although their backgrounds are diverse, they share a common goal, the support of business development in OL while preserving the character of the town.  They were both very involved in the recent revision of the Old Lyme Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD).  When reviewing applications received by the Planning Commission, they focus on how the applicant has satisfied the existing regulations.  Their questions are thoughtful, thorough, and together, they bring a great deal of experience and knowledge to the review process.

I believe that Barbara and Don are a great asset to the Planning Commission.  I ask Old Lyme voters to acknowledge their service and the benefit they bring to Old Lyme and vote for them on November 7th.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Harold Thompson,
Old Lyme.

Letter to the Editor: Shoemaker Has Required Skills to be Old Lyme First Selectwoman; ‘a Quick Study, Passionate,’ Determined to Address Issues for Benefit of All

To the Editor:

It is without hesitation that I write to endorse Martha Shoemaker’s candidacy for First Selectwoman of Old Lyme. Martha has served the people of Old Lyme the past 2 years as a Selectwoman and from observation, has dedicated herself to maintaining the community and character of Old Lyme while always looking forward.

Martha is my wife’s oldest and dearest friend and for the past 40 years she has also been my friend. I have watched Martha’s dedication to her career as an educator but more importantly, her devotion to friends and family. I have been fortunate to know Martha and her husband and to watch how they cared for aging parents, raised their children and managed careers and friendships.

During a visit to Martha’s home this summer, she took my wife and me on an extensive tour of Old Lyme. Martha’s pride and love for the community was obvious. Martha showed us the beautiful beaches, the historic areas and buildings and told us of her desire to make advancements such as reestablishing a flooding and erosion control board and addressing planning and zoning matters that will improve and protect Old Lyme.

I spent most of my professional career in municipal government, serving as a municipal engineer, director of public works and borough administrator and understand what it takes to run a small town. I am extremely impressed by Martha and see she has the skills required to serve the needs of Old Lyme. I recognize that Martha is a quick study, passionate, dedicated and determined to address the smallest issues raised by individual residents to townwide issues that affect all.

Again, I strongly endorse Martha Shoemaker’s candidacy for First Selectwoman of Old Lyme and ask that you give her your vote on November 7.

Sincerely,

Frank Zichelli, P.E.,
Manchester Center, VT.

Editor’s Note: Martha Shoemaker is the Old Lyme Democratic-endorsed candidate for Old Lyme Board of Selectmen.

Letter to the Editor: Hunt is Objective, Careful, Conscientious Decision-maker; After Six Years as Alternate, Elect Him to Old Lyme Board of Assessment Appeals

To the Editor:

I strongly recommend electing Peter Hunt to a regular position on the Old Lyme Board of Assessment Appeals. What are the qualifications needed for the job? In my view they are fairness, intelligence and thoughtfulness. You will not find anyone who embodies those qualities better then Peter.

Having served six years as an Alternate on the BOAA, Peter is fully familiar with its procedures and protocols. He is also well-versed in the relevant legal principles regarding property assessments and the appeals process. More subtly, he has learned to listen closely to the arguments presented on both sides and to distinguish between fact and fancy.

Peter is now retired from a 42-year career in health care and education. His PhD in clinical psychology makes him particularly well-qualified to be an objective, careful and conscientious decision-maker.

He is a committed contributor to our community in many ways, serving as a director of the Lyme-Old Lyme Food Share Garden and the Lymes’ Youth Service Bureau. He is also a justice of the peace.

Our town will be well served to vote Peter into a regular position on the BOAA on November 7th.

Sincerely,

Joseph G Soucie,
Old Lyme.

Editor’s Note: Peter Hunt is endorsed by the Old Lyme Democrats for election to a four-year term to the Old Lyme Board of Assessment Appeals.
