LYME-OLD LYME —The Daily Data Report issued Friday, March 18, by the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH) shows an increase of two in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Old Lyme taking the town’s cumulative case total to 1048.

No new cases were reported in Lyme, a single case leaving the cumulative case total at 246 meaning March 18 is the 19th consecutive day on which no new cases have been reported in Lyme.

The most recent day that no new cases were reported in either Lyme or Old Lyme was March 9.  There were also no new cases on March 4, and Feb. 24. The previous date prior to Feb. 24 when no new cases were reported in either town was Dec. 12, 2021.

The next Daily Data Report will be issued by CT DPH Monday, March 21, around 4 p.m.

Statewide Situation – Weekly Update

The most recent, weekly COVID-19 Case Rate Map, which was released Thursday, March 17, by CT DPH indicates that only nine municipalities are now in the Red (highest of four) Zone for case rates. This number has fallen by three from 12 since last week:- the nine Red Zone towns are Eastford, Guilford, Ledyard, Middletown, New Haven, New London, Salem, Weston, and Westport.

This reflects a further reduction in the number of towns in the Red Zone since late January. On Jan. 27, the total was 168 out of 169 towns and by Feb. 17, the total was 153. By Feb. 24, it had fallen to 87; on March 3, the total was 23, and and last week on March 12, it was 12.

However, Alex Putterman asks in an article published March 17, in The Hartford CourantIs another COVID-19 wave on the way? Connecticut experts ‘watching very carefully’ for BA.2 omicron subvariant, suggesting it is not yet time to let down our guard in respect of COVID precautions.

The March 17 total of nine is equivalent to 5.3% of towns in the state, which remain in the Red Zone.

As of March 17, New London and Ledyard are the only towns in the Ledge Light Health District (LLHD) remaining in the Red Zone. Two are in the Orange (second highest) Zone:- Stonington and East Lyme. Three are in the Yellow (second lowest) Zone:- Old Lyme,  Groton, and Waterford, while Lyme and North Stonington are in the Gray (lowest) Zone.

The weekly report dated March 17 for the nine member towns of the Ledge Light Health District (LLHD) shows that Old Lyme has the sixth highest Daily Case Rate at 17.8% behind New London, Ledyard, East Lyme, Stonington and Waterford.

Lyme is in 8th equal and lowest place with North Stonington for Daily Case Rates at 0% with both towns recording less than five cases reported in the past two weeks.

The next weekly LLHD report will be issued Thursday, March 24.

The CT DPH will issue an updated map of the zones Thursday, March 24 — the map is updated weekly on Thursdays.

The color-coded zones are:

Red: Indicates case rates over the last two weeks of greater than 15 per 100,000 population
Orange: Indicates case rates between 10 to 14 cases per 100,000 population
Yellow: Indicates case rates between 5 and 9 per 100,000 population
Gray: Indicates case rates lower than five per 100,000 population

Meanwhile, Lyme’s cumulative total on Aug. 26 was 114 indicating 142 new cases have also been confirmed there during the same period.

Ledge Light Health District Update

Two towns (Ledyard and New London) in the Ledge Light Health District (LLHD), of which both Lyme and Old Lyme are members, are in the Red Zone. In the past two weeks, Lyme has had less than 5 new cases while Old Lyme has reported 8 — the previous week’s numbers were respectively less than 5 and 13.

In an email sent Thursday, March 10, regarding the latest COVID-19 data, Ledge Light Health District (LLHD) Director of Health Stephen Mansfield states, “Based on surveillance data available in a new tool created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) called COVID-19 Community Levels, the municipalities within Ledge Light Health District (and all of New London County) are currently classified as low, the “best” classification available based on these new metrics.”

He continues, “Community Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID cases in a specific geographical area. CDC recommends taking precautions to protect yourself and others from COVID based on Community Levels in your area.”

He adds, “In New London County, residents are advised to:

  • Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines
  • Get tested if you have symptoms

Old Lyme’s EDC Offers Congratulations to ‘The Stumble Inne’ with Celebratory Ribbon-Cutting

Celebrating the ribbon-cutting at The Stumble Inne are (front row, from left to right) Selectman Matthew Ward, EDC Chair Cheryl Poirier, Cyndie Caramante, Kaisea Caramante, Jim Caramante, Selectwoman Martha Shoemaker, First Selectman Tim Griswold, and EDC Member MJ DeRisio. Standing in the back row are (from left to right) EDC Members Wendy Russell and Mona Colwell, and (far right) John Stratton. All photos by Alan Poirier.

OLD LYME — The luck of the Irish held back the rain for Thursday’s ribbon cutting at The Stumble Inne on Halls Road. The Caramante family, who own the sports bar and grille and its new expansion, were celebrated for their investment in the Old Lyme community with their second food establishment in Old Lyme’s business district.

The ribbon cutting was conducted by the Old Lyme Economic Development Commission (EDC), who have begun the program to bring attention to new business in town.

First Selectman Tim Griswold and EDC Chair Cheryl Poirier both made short remarks as part of the program, each highlighting the contribution owners Jim and Cyndie Caramante make to the community. Griswold noted the many quiet days the Caramante’s stayed open for “take-out service only” at their restaurant, The Hideaway, during the height of the pandemic.

Owner Jim Caramante prepares to cut the ceremonial ribbon at The Stumble Inne with members of his family, the Old Lyme Board of Selectmen and members of the Old Lyme Economic Development Commission (EDC) in attendance. Cheryl Poirier, EDC Chair, holds the Certificate of Appreciation from the EDC that was subsequently presented to the Caramante’s.

Poirier also noted during her remarks that the day marked both the Caramante’s commitment to Old Lyme, as well as the patrons’ commitment to supporting Old Lyme businesses such as The Stumble Inne. “It’s also a testament to all of you here today, supporting our small businesses.”

The Caramante’s have been Old Lyme business owners almost 20 years since they first purchased The Hideaway from the retiring owner, Carl Lutender. Jim worked for the Lutender’s at The Hideaway a number of years before the ownership transition.

Cyndi and Jim Caramante pose for a photo with their daughter Kaisea, who is holding the certificate presented by the Economic Development Commission. Mona Colwell, who is a member of the EDC, stands in the rear.

Jim and Cyndie became residents of Old Lyme when their oldest child was just becoming school-aged. “We moved to Old Lyme for the school system, and I started to work for the Lutenders, who were just great people. Now my kids are grown and live here in Old Lyme. We’ve grown roots here. I’ll never leave Old Lyme.”

And when the town went quiet during the long 2020 pandemic shutdown, the Caramante’s experienced the gratitude of the community that they have nurtured here over the years. “Customers were coming in buying thousands of dollars in gift certificates just to show their support,” Jim said. “People would come in just to sit with Cyndie and do puzzles with her while she waited for take-out orders to come in.”

When The Public House closed on Halls Road during the pandemic, the Caramante’s saw it as a chance to create a place for a younger crowd than is represented by their loyal customer base at The Hideaway. They soon opened The Stumble Inne featuring live music on the weekends, karaoke and trivia nights, and now a brand new pool room. “It’s a different vibe from The Hideaway and so there is something for everyone, “ Caramante said.

Caramante added, “Everyone’s been so supportive in town of The Stumble. The first night here was madness — it was packed.”

Following the official remarks of the day, a group of about 30 people including the Caramante’s daughter Kaisea and other extended family and friends moved outside for the official ribbon-cutting with Jim Caramante holding the ceremonial scissors. Cyndi then accepted a certificate of appreciation from the EDC.

“The EDC is committed to supporting our businesses in Old Lyme,” said Poirier. “We’re hoping to continue to highlight new businesses with ribbon-cuttings, and are excited to highlight all of our businesses on our new website ExploreOldLyme.com. We are a group of volunteers, appointed by the Town, and will do our best to support our business community.”

March 17 COVID-19 Update: Only Nine Towns Remain in Red Case Rate Zone in CT; Two Cases in Old Lyme Take Cumulative Total to 1046, Lyme Holds at 256

This map, updated March 17, 2022 shows the average daily rate of new cases of COVID-19 by town during the past two weeks. Old Lyme is now in the Yellow (second lowest) Zone while Lyme remains in the Gray (lowest) Zone. Only nine towns (representing a total of 5.3% of the state) are now found in the Red Zone. Only cases among persons living in community settings are included in this map; the map does not include cases among people who reside in nursing home, assisted living, or correctional facilities. Map: Ver 12.1.2020 Source: CT Department of Public Health Get the data Created with Datawrapper.

LYME-OLD LYME — On Thursday, March 17, the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH) released its latest weekly COVID-19 Alert Map (above), which indicates that only nine municipalities are now in the Red (highest of four) Zone for case rates.

However, Alex Putterman asks in an article published March 17, in The Hartford Courant, Is another COVID-19 wave on the way?

The Daily Data Report issued Thursday, March 17, by CT DPH shows an increase of two in confirmed COVID-19 cases in Old Lyme taking the town’s cumulative case total to 1046.

This number likely includes correction of an error since CT DPH was reporting a cumulative case total of 1045 on March 14 and 15. Then on Wednesday, March 16, the number was reduced to 1044, but on March 17, it has risen again to 1046.

Our experience is that a reduction in the total is generally an error, which is then corrected in a day or two. This appears to be the case once again.

Similarly in Lyme, a single case takes the cumulative total back to 256, which was the number previously reported daily from March 3 through 14 inclusive. On March 15 and 16, the number was reduced to 255, but on March 17, the total has now been restored to 246.

For our reporting purposes, we will say that March 17 is the 16th consecutive day on which no new cases have been reported in Lyme.

The most recent days that no new cases were reported in either Lyme or Old Lyme were March 9, March 4, and Feb. 24. The previous date prior to Feb. 24 when no new cases were reported in either town was Dec. 12, 2021.

The next Daily Data Report will be issued by CT DPH Friday, March 18, around 4 p.m.

Statewide Situation – Daily Update

The state’s COVID-19 Daily Positivity Rate on Thursday, March 17, increased marginally from 2.31% on March 16 to 2.40%. The March 10 rate of 1.79% was the first time the positivity rate had fallen below 2.0 since Oct. 7, 2021 according to our records, when it was 1.70%.

On March 17, the number of COVID-related hospitalizations increased by two from 98 to 100. In contrast, on Jan. 12, 2022, the number of COVID-related hospitalizations was 1,939.

Of those hospitalized on March 17, 43 (representing 43.0%) are not fully vaccinated.

The total number of COVID-related deaths in Connecticut held at 10,677, according to the New York Times.

On Aug. 26 — which was the day Lyme-Old Lyme Schools started the new academic year — Old Lyme’s cumulative case total stood at 372, meaning there have now been 674 new cases there since that date.

March 16 COVID-19 Update: Old Lyme Cumulative Case Reduced to 1044, Lyme Holds at 255

LYME-OLD LYME —The Daily Data Report issued Wednesday, March 16, 2022, around 4 p.m. by the Connecticut Department of Health (CT DPH) shows a reduction by one in confirmed COVID-19 cases in Old Lyme taking the town’s cumulative case total to 1044.

Our experience is that a reduction in the total is generally an error, which will be corrected in a day or two.

The cumulative case total in Lyme is still reported at 255. For our reporting purposes, we will continue to say that this is the 14th consecutive day on which no new cases have been reported.

We will not adjust our numbers in either town to reflect the reductions yet on the assumption they will be corrected.

The most recent days that no new cases were reported in either Lyme or Old Lyme were March 9, March 4, and Feb. 24. The previous time prior to Feb. 24 when no new cases were reported in either town was Dec. 12, 2021.

The next Daily Data Report will be issued by CT DPH Thursday, March 17, around 4 p.m.

Statewide Situation – Daily Update

The state’s COVID-19 Daily Positivity Rate on Wednesday, March 16, decreased marginally from 2.88% on March 15 to 2.31%. The March 10 rate of 1.79% was the first time the positivity rate had fallen below 2.0 since Oct. 7, 2021 according to our records, when it was 1.70%.

On March 16, the number of COVID-related hospitalizations decreased by 15 from 113 to 98. This is the first time the number of hospitalizations has fallen below 100 since we started recording it. In contrast, on Jan. 12, 2022, the number of COVID-related hospitalizations was 1,939.

Of those hospitalized on March 16, 42 (representing 37.2%) are not fully vaccinated.

The total number of COVID-related deaths in Connecticut rose to 10,675, according to the New York Times.

Statewide Situation – Weekly Update

In extremely encouraging news, the March 10 COVID Case Rate map shows that the total number of towns in the Red (highest) Zone for case rates has fallen by 11 since last week to 12. This reflects a dramatic fall in the number of towns in the Red Zone since late January. On Jan. 27, the total was 168 out of 169 towns and by Feb. 17, the total was 153. By Feb. 24, it had fallen to 87, and last week on March 3, the total was 23.

The March 10 total of 12 is equivalent to 7.1% of towns in the state, which remain in the Red Zone.

As of March 10, only two towns in the Ledge Light Health District (LLHD) remain in the Red Zone: East Lyme and New London. Four are in the Orange (second highest) Zone: Old Lyme,  Ledyard, Stonington and Waterford. Two are in the Yellow (second lowest), and Lyme remains in the Gray (lowest) Zone.

This is the first time Old Lyme has fallen out of the Red (highest) Zone for 15 consecutive weeks.

When looking at the weekly report dated March 10 for the nine member towns of the Ledge Light Health District (LLHD), Old Lyme has the third equal highest Daily Case Rate at 12.7% behind East Lyme at 19.3% and New London at 31.4%.

In contrast, however, Lyme, is in 9th and lowest place for Daily Case Rates at 0% with less than five cases reported in the past two weeks.

The next weekly LLHD report will be issued Thursday, March 17.

The CT DPH will issue an updated map of the zones Thursday, March 17 — the map is updated weekly on Thursdays.

As of March 9, 2022: (the number in parentheses is from March 2, 2022)

Number of cases of COVID-19 among fully vaccinated persons in Connecticut: 174,207 (172,677)
Number of fully vaccinated persons in Connecticut:  2,679,485 (2,668,072)
Percent of fully vaccinated persons, who have contracted COVID-19: 6.5% (6.47%)

For the week beginning Feb. 27, 2022: (the number in parentheses is from Feb. 20, 2022)

Risk of unvaccinated persons testing positive for COVID-19 as compared to fully vaccinated persons: 2.4 x greater (3.1 x greater)
Risk of unvaccinated persons dying from COVID-19 as compared to fully vaccinated persons: 15.9 x greater (17.5 x greater)

Increase in Cases in Lyme & Old Lyme Since August 2021

The cumulative total of confirmed cases for Old Lyme has now increased by 602 since Wednesday, Nov. 10, when the total stood at 443 — that number had stood unchanged for a week since the previous Thursday, Nov. 4.

On Aug. 26 — which was the day Lyme-Old Lyme Schools started the new academic year — Old Lyme’s cumulative case total stood at 372, meaning there have now been 673 new cases there since that date. Meanwhile, Lyme’s cumulative total on Aug. 26 was 114 indicating 142 new cases have also been confirmed there during the same period.

Ledge Light Health District Update

Two towns (East Lyme and New London) in the Ledge Light Health District (LLHD), of which both Lyme and Old Lyme are members, are in the Red Zone. In the past two weeks, Lyme has had less than 5 new cases while Old Lyme has reported 13 — the previous week’s numbers were respectively less than 5 and 30.

LLHD continues to focus our vaccination efforts on homebound populations and providing initial vaccinations and boosters to individuals who were vaccinated previously. Information about vaccination opportunities can be found at https://llhd.org/coronavirus-covid-19-situation/covid-19-vaccine/.”

Fatalities Due to COVID-19 in Lyme, Old Lyme

There has been one COVID-related fatality of a Lyme resident: a 57-year-old male passed away Nov. 16, 2021. On Nov. 30, the state finally included this fatality in its data

Four COVID-related fatalities have now been reported in Old Lyme. The first two fatalities from Old Lyme, which were reported in 2020, were a 61-year-old female and an 82-year-old male.

Details of the third and fourth fatalities, which were reported respectively in 2021 and on Feb. 4, 2022, have not been made available.

Lyme-Old Lyme Schools Update

Under new state protocols for schools, Lyme-Old Lyme (LOL) Schools are no longer required to carry out contact tracing , but LOL Schools Superintendent Ian Neviaser said in a Feb. 17 email to the school community that, “Through the end of March we will continue to send daily COVID-19 case numbers for those who are interested in tracking this information.”

He added, “Beginning in April, we will report these numbers on a weekly basis.”

A full listing of all LOL Schools-related cases during 2022 is given below.

During Winter Break for LOL Schools, no case reporting was announced until Monday, Feb. 28. Schools are now back in session. One new case was reported on March 2 and another on March 3. In further good news, no new cases were reported on March 4, or March 7-12. One new case was reported on each day of March 13, 14 and 16.

Lyme-Old Lyme Schools closed Dec. 23, 2021 and reopened Monday, Jan. 3, 2022 after the winter break meaning no new cases were reported by the schools during that period. We are no longer including positive cases impacting LOL schools between Aug 26, 2021 (the first day of the 2021-22 academic school year) and Dec. 23, 2021 (the last day of school before winter break began), in this report. During that period contact tracing was still required.
