Message From Ledge Light on Tractor-Trailer Fire in N. Stonington, Keep Clear of Pawcatuck River, Tributaries in Specified Area

AREAWIDE — We have been sent a message from Stephen Mansfield, Director of Health, Ledge Light Health District for immediate publication:

This afternoon, a tractor trailer was traveling northbound on I-95 in North Stonington and crashed into the bridge over Rte 49. The truck and trailer caught fire and was extinguished.

It has been determined that the tractor trailer was carrying various herbicides and pesticides. Though much of the materials were consumed by fire, DEEP is currently assessing the possible effects on surface and groundwater, including assessing water quality in the Pawcatuck River and its tributaries.

Residents are advised to avoid the Pawcatuck River and its tributaries from the junction of I-95 and Rte. 49, south to the mouth of the Pawcatuck River. [Our bold]

DEEP, the state agency leading this response, is working with the cargo carrier, CT DPH Drinking Water Section, Ledge Light Health District, Westerly Water Dept. and local officials regarding this incident, and will be providing more details as they become available.

Using Named Shoreline Conference Player of the Year, Sheffield, Doll, Ritchie Also All Honored

Aedan Using, who has been named Shoreline Conference Player of the Year, gives his mom, Carina Using, a hug on Senior Night at Lyme-Old Lyme High School.

LYME-OLD LYME — Yesterday Lyme-Old Lyme’s lead scorer and “Big Man” (6 ft. 5 in.) senior Aedan Using was unanimously selected as the Shoreline Conference Player of the Year.

Last season he was named to the CIAC Division V All-State First Team and next fall will play basketball at Brandeis University.

Also, Using’s team mates and fellow Seniors Brady Sheffield and Ray Doll were named to the First and Second Conference teams respectively, while Senior Jared Ritchie received an Honorable Mention.

A delighted coach Kirk Kaczor commented to LymeLine, “It’s the first time we’ve ever had that many kids honored.”

This evening at 7:30 p.m. top seeds Old Lyme face Cromwell, seeded fifth, in a Shoreline Conference Championship semifinal to be playd in the Lyme-Old Lyme High School gym. The match-up is a repeat of last year’s hard-fought Conference final, which Old Lyme ultimately lost in overtime.

Asked for his thoughts on the upcoming game, Kaczor commented, “We’ve got a great opportunity Tuesday to play a very good Cromwell team.  It gives us a chance to get to the finals [this year] where we lost to them a year ago.”

The other semifinal is between second-seeded Valley and third seeds Morgan.

ECSO Continues 73rd Season with “Spring Strings” Featuring Grammy-winning Guitarist, Jason Vieaux, March 28

NEW LONDON — The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra’s (ECSO) 19-20 season continues  Saturday, March 28, at The Garde in New London with an exciting program that features a Grammy Award winner along with classic compositions.

Edward Elgar’s concert overture In the South opens the program with an exuberant theme re-purposed from another work, that expresses his experiences with his family in Italy.

The soloist for the evening is Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux. Vieaux, who NPR describes as, “perhaps the most precise and soulful classical guitarist of his generation,”  and Gramophone says is, “among the elite of today’s classical guitarists,” performs Joaquín Rodrigo’s well known Concierto de Aranjuez. Rodrigo was blinded at a very young age, but this challenge did not hinder him from composing his acclaimed guitar concerto, inspired by the sounds and fragrances of the Royal Gardens of Aranjuez, Spain.

Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 finishes out the evening. Written not long after his first symphony, at the inspiring backdrop of a vacation in Pörtschach, Austria, Brahms let the environment influence his  joyful symphony.

Prior to the evening’s concert that starts at 7:30 p.m., all attendees are invited to a free pre-concert chat with Toshiyuki Shimada starting at 6:30 p.m. All attendees are also invited to meet and greet with fellow concertgoers and ECSO musicians at the complimentary post-concert reception in the upper lobby of the Garde Arts Center.

This concert is generously sponsored by Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Single tickets ($35 – $65) for the ECSO’s 2019-20 season are now on sale to the public. Tickets can be purchased online at gardearts.org, by calling the Garde Arts Center Box Office at 860-444-7373 x 1, calling the Symphony office at 860-443-2876, or in person at the ECSO office at 289 State Street, New London, CT.
