The Country School Welcomes Families to Register for ‘Minds in Motion’

The Country School, Madison, is serving once again as host to Minds in Motion, a student enrichment program featuring interactive, fast-paced, hands-on workshops for children in Kindergarten through 8th Grade. Being held on Saturday, Oct. 17, on the school’s 23-acre campus in Madison, Minds in Motion will also feature programming for parents and teachers.

Minds in Motion, the Connecticut Association for the Gifted’s signature student enrichment program, provides children opportunities to explore areas of interest that are rarely part of the everyday classroom. While students participate in workshops, parents are invited to attend a thought-provoking keynote address and their own special-interest workshop. This is the third year Minds in Motion has been held at The Country School.

Student workshops will range from squid dissection to fencing, robotics to song-writing with Steve Song of PBS Kids. Space will be allotted on a first come, first served basis.

This year’s keynote address, Teaching the Whole Child: The Importance of Character Education, will be delivered by Licensed Professional Counselor Kerry Shay and Country School music teacher Victoria Wepler. Parent workshops include: New Family Habits, with Gena Rotas, LICSW, Powerful Strategies to Enhance the Learning of Gifted Students with Nathan Levy, President, Nathan Levy Books, and Best Practices in Mathematics Curriculum and Instruction, with Louise Jackson, Country School math teacher.

Lyme Church Rummage Sale Takes Place Today

Lyme First Congregational Church’s Annual Spring Rummage Sale will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.   at the church on Rte. 156 in Lyme across from the Subaru dealership.   Admission is free and the sale is so huge that three buildings are used to hold all the treasures!

Drop off is from Monday, Sept. 21, through Thursday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m.

Refreshments will be also be available.

Lyme Public Hall Association Hosts Cemetery Walking Tour This Afternoon

Cemeteries are one of Lyme’s most important historic resources, an important link to our past.  A walking tour aptly titled, ‘Cemetery 101,’of the Pleasant View Cemetery in Lyme on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. will explore how cemeteries have changed over time.

The leaders of the walking tour, Parker Lord and Jim Beers, have unique knowledge of Lyme’s historic cemeteries, and over the past decade have been leading a team restoring cemeteries in Lyme.

Pleasant View Cemetery has been used for burials for more than 225 years and is an ideal location to understand how cemeteries have evolved.  Early cemetery patterns,  and the evolution of symbols and inscriptions on gravestones will be discussed on the tour as well as early gravestone carvers active in the Lyme area.

Pleasant View Cemetery is located at the junction of Rte. 156 and Salem Rd in Lyme, Conn.   There is no charge for this program.

The Lyme Public Hall Association is dedicated to the appreciation of Lyme, Connecticut’s history, culture, and community through the preservation and use of the historic hall, its archives and historical programs.

Fresh From His ‘The Voice’ Victory, Sunshine Sings at ‘The Public House’ Tonight

Braiden@ThePublicHouse_v2After his amazing success on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ on Monday when he was selected by both Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams to join their respective teams , 15-year old Braiden Sunshine of Lyme will be playing a solo acoustic set at The Public House in Old Lyme this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

For the record, Sunshine chose Stefani as his coach for the next round of ‘The Voice.’

Estuary Hosts ‘Shoreline Chefs’ Sunday Afternoon, Benefits ‘Meals on Wheels

  • Shoreline Chefs 2015OLD SAYBROOK – Shoreline Chefs, a fundraising event featuring local professional and home chefs and notable locals cooking up small plate tastings for both fun and competition, will be held Sunday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m. on the Old Saybrook Town Green. Tickets at $35 are available now at the Estuary Council of Seniors, which is sponsoring this first-time event.

Restauranteurs, caterers, gifted home cooks, and neighborhood notables are providing food and their cooking talent for an afternoon and evening of small plate tastings. Fun loving friends and patrons who purchase a ticket, will have the privilege of tasting delicious recipes. The event includes a silent auction and entertainment.

The list of Shoreline Chefs currently includes: Dagmar’s Desserts, Apple Rehab, The Estuary, The Town of Old Saybrook, Porky Pete’s BBQ, Old Saybrook Fire Department, The Tea Kettle, Guilford Savings Bank, Mirsina’s Restaurant, Homeworks, the Pursuit of Pastry and The Town of Old Lyme.

Join this event for an afternoon of food, fun and fundraising to support the services of the Estuary Council of Seniors. Throughout the nine town Estuary region, one out of every four individuals is now using one of the Estuary Council of Senior’s vital programs.

Last year, the Estuary provided 70,000 hot, nutritious meals to individuals in our nine town district. The Estuary also provide medical outpatient transportation, social and educational programs and numerous trips and activities. The organization’s challenge is to keepup with the increased need and the cost of providing services.
