Community Music School (CMS), located in the Spencer’s Corner professional complex at 90 Main Street in Centerbrook, welcomes the general public to visit during Open House Week Sept. 9 through 13.

Children and adults can tour the School’s studios, meet teachers and staff, enjoy a free preview lesson, and learn about a vast array of programs including private and group lessons, Kindermusik early childhood program, vocal performance prep, Suzuki instruction, New Horizon Band for adult beginners, jazz and string ensembles, and music therapy services.

Community Music School is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.  Those interested in a 15-minute preview lesson are requested to call 860-767-0026 for scheduling.

Community Music School offers innovative music programming for infants through adults, building on a 30 year tradition of providing quality music instruction to residents of shoreline communities.  CMS programs cultivate musical ability and creativity and provide students with a thorough understanding of music so that they can enjoy playing and listening for their entire lives.

Ledge Light Health District to Conduct Emergency Preparedness Survey This Weekend, Offering Gift Cards for Survey Completion

The Ledge Light Health District Medical Reserve Corp (MRC), in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will conduct a training and exercise in disaster epidemiology on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8.

As part of the exercise, representatives from the Ledge Light MRC will ask residents in the Millstone Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) to participate in a household emergency preparedness survey.

The neighborhoods will be selected at random.  Survey teams will knock on doors and offer $5 Dunkin Donuts gift cards to residents who complete a brief questionnaire.

Ledge Light Health District Medical Reserve Corp provides medical and non-medical surge capacity and shelter support to nine municipalities in southern New London County during disasters.

Four Local Mystery Writers Featured in Lyme Library Centennial Lecture Series

Four local mystery writers will speak as part of the Lyme Public Library’s Centennial Lecture series on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lyme Congregational Church.  James R. Benn, Lucy Burdette, David Handler, and Eugenia West will discuss the art of mystery writing and adapting to the ever-changing world of publishing.

James R. Benn is the author of the Billy Boyle WWII historical mysteries.  The eighth novel in the series, A Blind Goddess, will be published in September 2013.  His debut novel, Billy Boyle, was short-listed for the Dilys Award and named one of the top five mysteries of 2006.

Lucy Burdette (aka Roberta Isleib) is a clinical psychologist and the author of eleven mysteries, most recently the Key West food critic series.  Topped Chef was published in May 2013.  Lucy’s alter-ego, clinical psychologist Roberta Isleib, has published eight mysteries including the golf lover’s mystery series and the advice column mysteries.

Edgar Award-winner David Handler has written eight novels about celebrity ghostwriter Stewart Hoag and his faithful, neurotic basset hound, Lulu, as well as nine titles in his bestselling series featuring the mismatched crime-fighting duo of New York film critic Mitch Berger and CT State Trooper Desiree Mitry.  His publication of Runaway Man this summer is the debut of young Benji Golden, a feisty and street-wise New York private detective.

Eugenia West is the author of a historical/suspense, The Ancestors Cry Out and the Emma Streat mysteries Without Warning  and Overkill.  The third Emma Streat mystery is in the works.

The Shoreline League of Democratic Women (SLDW) hosts its 2013-14 Season Kick-off event on Friday, Sept. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pavilion at Saybrook Point, 150 College Street in Old Saybrook. Special guest speaker will be CT State Representative Diana Urban, 43rd District.

Diana Urban was first elected to the General Assembly in 2000, and is currently serving her fifth term. She is a member of the Legislature’s Environment Committee, and the Program Review and Investigations Committee.  She is Chair of the Select Committee on Children, as well as Co-Chair of the Results Based Accountability Sub Committee of the Appropriations Committee.  She previously served on the Energy and Technology Committee and the Planning and Development Committee.

Urban has significant concerns about both the economy and environment, and is committed to finding and maintaining a balance to encourage sustainable growth within Connecticut.  She wishes to protect the most vulnerable children and provide ample educational opportunities to all children in Connecticut, recognizing the role they will play in the future.

She has been the legislative champion for addressing the “circle of violence” that recognizes that animal abuse too often is a harbinger of domestic abuse and criminal activity.  Urban’s legislative agenda reflects these values and she works closely with constituents and advocacy groups to craft legislation to impact these issues.

For 26 years Urban was employed as an Economics and Political Science professor.  Most recently she taught Micro and Macro Economics, Environmental Studies and Regulation as an Adjunct professor at Three Rivers College and Environmental Conservation at the University of Connecticut Avery Point.  She is currently a Senior Consultant with the Results Leadership Group in Washington DC.

Throughout her tenure in the General Assembly, Urban has led the fight for Results Based Accountability (RBA) in Budgeting in the State of Connecticut  She has also been recognized by Governing Magazine as a National Leader in High Performance Government for her work on RBA and recently the NCSL awarded Connecticut the Con Hogan Award for RBA and Work on Innovation in Government.  She fervently believes that accountability and transparency are essential to good government.

The Shoreline League of Democratic Women is a social and political fellowship that unites Democratic women along the shoreline, and focuses on issues important to women of all ages. Women are encouraged to join the SLDW and participate in the organization’s valuable work in the community.

Participation may be 30 minutes a month, or 30 minutes a year. As a part of the SLDW educational charter, members will be notified of important pending state and national legislation.

Cappella Cantorum Men’s Chorus Gives Concert at ‘The Kate,’ Sept. 29

The 30 voice Men’s Chorus of Cappella Cantorum returns to the stage at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St. in Old Saybrook, on Sunday, Sept. 29th at 3 p.m.

Music features selections from Phantom of the Opera, a Civil War Medley, gospel, spirituals, and barbershop favorites by The Hill Top Four.  Barry Asch is the conductor with Deborah Lyon as accompanist.

In early October, the Men’s Chorus will conclude their performance schedule in Dennis, Mass., Cape Cod.
