Old Lyme Fire, Police Host Highly Successful Holiday Food/Toy Drive

Photos by T. Heinssen.

Yesterday morning and early afternoon were a hive of activity at the Old Lyme Firehouse on Lyme Street. Members of the Old Lyme Fire and Police Departments  responded with vigor to the Fire Chief’s Holiday  Toy and Food Drive Challenge.

With boots in hand for monetary donations, men and women of both departments also collected donations of food and toys from traffic traveling up and down Lyme Street.

There was a cheery elf (right in photo above) out at work and one lucky worker found himself the temporary guardian of  an oversized teddy bear.

Old Lyme First Selectman Bonnie Reemsnyder (above, right) came out to assist the drive …

… as did these willing youngsters who loaded their toy donations into the waiting truck themselves.

At the end of the drive, approximately 350 pounds of food, 250 toys and twelve hundred and fifty dollars in donations had been collected.

Reemsyder paid tribute to the fire and police department’s joint efforts saying, “Great results.  Thanks to everyone who worked so hard … particularly the well-dressed elf!”

We’ll echo her words and say heartily — and with many thanks, “Congratulations on a job well done!”

St. Ann’s Installs New Rector

The Rev. Canon Mark K. J. Robinson, pictured at center in photo above, was installed  on Nov. 30 to Saint Ann’s Episcopal Church in Old Lyme. This ceremony welcomed Canon Robinson in a spiritual festival, which involved members of all ages of the church.

The church wardens presented Canon Robinson as being well qualified and prayerfully chosen to the Rt. Rev. Ian Theodore Douglas, Bishop of Connecticut (pictured left in photo above), who commended this choice.

Various gifts – future tools of his work – were presented, and included a Bible, oil, the key of Saint Ann’s, histories of Old Lyme, a local topography map, and items representing the various ministries of the church.

Music of traditional and spiritual style resonated throughout the ceremony.  The parishioners were led to a reception in the Griswold church hall by a bagpiper, where the festive atmosphere continued.

Robinson was ordained in 1988 in the Episcopal Diocese of Maine.   Over the years he has served as a school Chaplain, assistant rector, pastoral care associate, rector and most recently as Canon for Mission, Episcopal Diocese of Ohio.

Robinson and his wife Eleanor noted they are glad to begin this new chapter back in parish ministry in Old Lyme.  Parishioners at Saint Ann’s equally expressed eager anticipation to be at this exciting juncture in their church life.

No Pay Raise for LOL Teachers, Administrators Next Year Under New Wage Agreements

The Lyme-Old Lyme (Region 18) Public Schools’ teachers have agreed to no wage increase for the last year of the four year agreement they are currently working under. Under the agreement, there will be no general wage increase or step advance for 2012-2013. There will be no increase in insurance premium cost share or co-pays for the same period.

The Board of Education and the Region 18 Teachers Association reached the agreement and approved it this week. Board Chairman Jim Witkins said, “The ratification vote demonstrates each side has a clear recognition of the difficult and uncertain economic times in our state and the local community. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to address challenges in a manner that supports the high quality of education in Region 18.”

Superintendent of Schools Elizabeth Osga and local presidents, Richard LaVecchia and Pam Russell, said in a joint statement released today, “The Lyme-Old Lyme Board and Teachers continue to approach negotiations as a collaborative process to address the community’s and the teachers’ needs.”

District schools and programs have received a number of accolades over recent years including high state and national rankings for the high school, the CAS elementary school of the year award and numerous program recognitions. The hard work of teachers is an important component to achieve these rankings. “We are in this together,” says Co-president LaVecchia.

Osga said, “Our joint efforts will provide the community and our students with a model for effective labor–management relations as we continue to discuss other issues, such as health insurance costs, education reform initiatives and successor agreements.”

Meanwhile, the Lyme-Old Lyme Administrators Association (LOLA) and the Region 18 Board of Education have reached an agreement on a new three year contract that will take effect on July 1, 2012. The terms of the contract call for no wage increase in 2012-2013 followed by 2.0% and 2.5% increases in the next two years.

The health insurance plan will remain substantially the same in the first year. The employees will increase their premium shares in the next two years and have agreed to plan modifications.

Association President James Cavalieri and Board Chair James Witkins are pleased to reach an agreement that is reasonable and responsible as the District continues its tradition of excellence in challenging economic times.

Osga noted, “Our leadership team is both talented and dedicated to the educational needs of the community. We are grateful for their service and pleased to have a new agreement with them.”
