Learn Mah Jongg at the OL Library

The Old Lyme Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library is offering a six-week course on how to play Mah Jongg on Wednesdays through Dec. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Mah Jongg has recently gained a new-found popularity in the US.  It is a fun, challenging and competitive game that was brought to America in the early 1920s from China where it originated.  It is commonly played by four players using a set of 136 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols.  Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy and calculation and involves a certain degree of chance.

Learn how to play and focus on the skills that will make you a patient and avid player while keeping the brain active and agile.  Enjoy socializing with others in the community while acquiring a new hobby. Beginners and more experienced players are all welcome.

The cost is $10 per person per class.  You can register for as many classes as you can attend.  Class size is limited to 12.  Registrations to learn the game are accepted on a first-come basis or just show up and play. Checks should be made out to the Old Lyme PGN Library.

Joanie Fitton is a well known Old Lyme instructor of both yoga and Mah Jongg.  All classes take place in the Library’s Community Room.  Come inside from the fall weather and and join to learn an exciting new pastime you can play all year long.

The Library is located at 2 Library Lane, off Lyme Street in Old Lyme.  Hours are Monday and Wednesday, 10am to 7pm; Tuesday and Thursday, 10am to 6pm; Friday, 10am to 5pm and Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. For more information, call 860-434-1684 or visit www.oldlyme.lioninc.org .
